Managing The Human Project

By Laura B. Moore

AT&T, USA

A few weeks ago someone came up to me and started talking about how she had always wanted to become more involved in community service, but never knew what to do. This was odd to me since I was brought up in a home where community service and charitable contributions were a natural part of existence. It dawned on me yet again, that I grew up in a very special environment with, although not appreciated as such at the time, very cool parents!

Being an inquisitive type, I began asking around, and the feelings of the woman from my office were not isolated to just her.  There were others who knew how to get involved – some much more than me, but more who did not.  I therefore figured I’d start a discussion with this article, with the request that others who read this in turn, share their ideas, and who knows, maybe even start a community of PMPs who are together, “Managing the Human Project”.

In these economic times remember that it’s not all about giving money; as a matter of fact, your time and energy is just as valuable to the charities, and sometimes more valuable!  Remember, the most valuable thing you have to give is yourself!

Getting Started

One place to start with this is to focus on what makes the PM community unique: what special talents/skills do we have to bring?  This should be obvious – we have our project management expertise…
