PM ADVISORY:

IT Governance of outsourced organizations

How to avoid business break up?

By Allesandro Bolloni, PMP

In today’s world, where all time-space distances are shrunk, where technology is advancing at a superhuman speed and knowledge is accessible from any place on Earth at any time, Top Managers and IT Managers are facing daily business challenges whose dependency on the IT domain could determine either the company success or failure. The mentioned challenges are manifold:

  • supporting the business needs and keeping the pace of competitors benefiting of leading-edge IT innovations, best-of-breed products, top quality professional services;

  • alignment of IT architecture strategy with the business strategic planning;

  • optimization of IT Total Cost of Ownership while reducing the Time-To-Market of IT implementations and changing variable costs to fixed costs;

  • maintaining high standards of IT efficiency via scalable IT architecture, high quality operations and proper governance;

  • commoditization of IT services. As the IT services are less and less key differentiators to develop and sustain company business, companies are seeking on the market standardized and cheaper services instead of building their own.

In recent years companies whose business is tightly bound with IT are severely pressured (exacerbated by the economic downturn) due to the huge investments required to tackle the mentioned challenges. As a consequence, the always valid Hamlet-like question “make or buy” is nowadays applied to entire IT Divisions and not just to specific IT applications.
