REGIONAL REPORT:

Project Management Update from Kigali

Rwanda

By Isaac Nyarawaya
International Correspondent

Kigali, Rwanda

Introduction

The year 2011 has ended and the New Year has started. A lot of things have happened in the area of project management. Perhaps the year 2011 was when a lot of things have happened in project management professionalization in Rwanda. Some of the notable achievements were the roll-out of Single Projects Implementation Units (SPIUs) in Government Ministries and agencies, PMP preparation courses, other Project Management Trainings, and so on.

I am waiting with a lot of excitement and enthusiasms about what the year 2012 holds for us especially in the area of project management. Read on to have a glimpse of some of the happenings in Rwanda.

Partnership of Rwanda Institute of Administration and Management (RIAM) and Maastricht School of Management (MSM) in Project Management Training:

Rwanda Institute of Administration and Management (RIAM) in collaboration with Maastricht School of Management (MSM) of the Netherlands have started a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management. Participants were among others introduced to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).

One of the outputs of the training which has really touched me was that the participants were enthusiastic about gaining a project management certification and putting together an effort to initiate a project management association in Rwanda. The recent training was concluded in December 2011 and participants were drawn from Government Institutions.

These graduates present a generation of young and energetic Rwandans who have the passion to advance the profession in project management in Rwanda and beyond.

Initial contacts done to start a Project Management Association

We have started contacting Rwandans passionate about Project Management in a move to start some kind of Project Management Association in Rwanda. Five of them have PMP Certifications and about 6 are scheduled to sit for the PMP in early 2012.  Others are graduates in the RIAM/MSM Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management and all of them are eager to be certified as Project Managers.

Rwanda is known for embracing all good practices and contextualizing them to the local situation and in that thinking, we would like to have a body that aligns its thinking and practice to the Project Management Institute (PMI) snf International Project Management Association (IPMA). The initial proposed name is Rwanda Institute of Project Management (RIPM).

We would like to request foreign experts in Rwanda working in the area of Project Management to join hands with these youth for this noble cause.
