Structured Project and Operations Management Essential for Success of the Current Presidential Initiatives on Power Supply

1. Introduction

Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has embarked on high-powered initiatives to address the problem of daily and perpetual poor supply of electricity in the nation [1]. As the Minister of State for Power, Mr. Nuhu Wya, made this announcement on Thursday, April 8th, he added that that “ ---the Acting President is passionate about the economic development of this country and knows that without power we can't have any meaningful development[2]”. While this statement appears to summarise the economic and business justification for the measures, we would submit that the discipline of structured project management, and operations management techniques are essential for success of the presidential initiatives.

2. Objectives of Paper

Our objectives in this paper are not only to report the details of the initiatives but also to make our contributions that could help facilitate their success. We would work from the standpoint that success of projects is borne of the faithful and comprehensive implementation of all the phases of structured project management. In addition, we would make the point that completing the project successfully is only the first hurdle to be cleared for success. Sustainability and maintainability of the delivered products are other prerequisites for success…

Dr. O. Chima Okereke, Ph.D., MBA, PMP is an International Correspondent for PMForum and PMWorld Today in Nigeria. Dr. Okereke has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Lagos, and a Ph.D. and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Bradford in the UK. With over 25 years of experience in industrial operations and PM, he has been a registered engineer in Nigeria since 1983.
