Project Management Update from Kigali

Introduction
Our leaders might be aware that Rwanda is now an active member of the East African Community (EAC). In this issue, we touch mainly on news and events that cut across the community.
News from Big Local Projects
Before we touch on cross border projects, we would like to inform our readers that recently the Rwanda ‘Coffee Lifeline’ project scooped a ‘Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) 2010 Sustainability’ award in London. This project uses energy’s wind-up and solar powered radios to provide Rwandan coffee farmers with access to important coffee-growing, health, weather and market information, even in the remote hills of the country’s coffee growing regions. The project is implemented by Lifeline Energy, a company that focuses on reducing energy poverty for the extremely poor by engaging the community.
The project also produces a coffee-specific, agricultural extension radio programme which is broadcasted nationwide by the National University of Rwanda’s Radio Salus. It is estimated that 200,000 coffee farmers listen to the programme each month. Coffee Lifeline project is a brainchild of coffee trader Peter Kettler, who approached Lifeline Energy after discovering that most rural coffee farmers did not know the price of coffee beans on the world market…

Isaac Nyarwaya
Isaac Nyarwaya is an International Correspondent for PMForum and PM World Today in Rwanda. He has over 9 years of project management experience in the NGO sector, United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and recently in the private sector. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Management with Distinction from the National University of Rwanda and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Project Management from the Maastricht School of Management. He also has a PRINCE2 (Foundation) Certification and is scheduled to sit for the PMP exam this year. He has been a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) since 1997. Mr. Nyarwaya is in the process of establishing the Centre for Project Management Excellence (CPME Ltd) in Kigali to conduct project management related consultancy, training, research and publication. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Independent Institute of Lay Adventists of Kigali (INILAK). Isaac is committed to promoting professional project management in Rwanda and he dreams of having many certified project managers and a professional project management body in the country one day.
