REGIONAL REPORT:

UK Project Management Round Up

UK

By Miles Shepherd
International Correspondent for PMForum
& PM World Today

Salisbury, England, UK

Introduction

As the news shifts to politics, with the Chancellor of the Exchequer issuing his Budget, attention is still focused on the weakness of the £ and lack of investment in infrastructure.  However, there are some signs of a cautious upturn with news of new car models from Nissan, and new proposals for rail and power investment.

Car Production

Two announcements in a week heralded a major resurgence in the British Car industry.  Lord Mandelson announced government support for government support to the motor industry.  The announcement claimed that the British tax payer will provide hundreds of millions of pounds in loans, guarantees and grants to develop new low-carbon vehicles.  Ford, General Motors and Nissan will all benefit from the investment.

Ford will have UK engine factories in Dagenham, Southampton and Bridgend underpinned by a £270 million government loan guarantee in addition to some £360 million loan from the European Investment Bank.  Ford say they will invest £1.5 billion in Britain over five years.  The Government support is to enable Ford to develop the new generation of lean burn diesel and petrol engines for its cars around the world.  Although they no longer manufacture cars in UK, some 25% of all Ford engines are manufactured in this country.  According to press reports, the money is to be used in support of its research & development facility at Dunton, Essex and its British plants.  The funding is expected to safeguard the jobs of 2,800 skilled workers out of its 16,000 workforce.
