Saints or Sinners – Sustainability in the Construction Industry
Saints or sinners? With that provocative title, Murray Coleman, Global CEO of Bovis Lend Lease, exhorted an audience of industry professionals, faculty and students to do more in promoting sustainable construction practices. Mr. Coleman was addressing a session co-hosted by the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) and Build Environment Design & Management (BEDM), the research body of the University of Technology Sydney’s School of the Built Environment, on 17 March. He referred to opportunities in which construction companies can reduce energy, water and waste by focusing on renewable technologies and areas such as waste management and water capture, both during the construction phase and in the building’s total life.
He made specific reference to the 2006 refurbishment of 500 Collins Street, a 28-level multi-tenanted block in the CBD of Melbourne, Australia. The then-30 year old building when renovated became the first commercial CBD refurbishment to achieve a 5 Star Green Rating.
Not only did this reduce the energy bill by A$15,000 per annum, but it also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1,700 tons a year, and increased workforce productivity by 11.7% through lower absenteeism. The building retained a 70% or higher occupancy rate throughout the refurbishment…
