Project Management and Adding Value to the Business in Distress
How Project Management Endures Tough Times in Romania
By Florin Gheorghiu, PMP International Correspondent for PMForum & PM World Today Bucharest, Romania
Every time a business problem occurs one can automatically think there is a right time for a project to be authorized to work it off. What if the entire business is in trouble, could Project Management be called to rescue the entire sector?
Romania has entered in recession after years of sustained and healthy economic growth.
Even though the officials avoid recognizing it, the cruel realities and figures show that abrupt downturns of financial and economic indicators are no longer just a fact we used to see in the past in western economies. It is now a fact of life that Romania is facing with a severe slump in terms of economical growth.
Projects environment couldn’t get away from this and it was affected at the practical level: many projects have been canceled, others in the pipeline deferred or closed, jobs for project managers are rare. Businesses that considered project managers as value added professionals in the time of economic flourishment, while in distress they are simply expensive resources ready to be sacrificed in order for the company to endure.
It is unclear if the move towards shrinking entire organizations either in IT or financial and construction sectors is based on a critical unbiased analysis beforehand or just a simple pattern of overall attitude. As in the rest of the world, in Romania many companies started laying off apparently without a right cause. Judged by the quickness and radical actions, the companies seemed to react emotionally rather than economically justified in firing workforce and professionals and announcing many investment projects being cancelled.
