Project Updates and other News Affecting Projects & PM
in Uruguay

The 2008 figures regarding the local economic growth were recently published. 2008 was a very good year for Uruguay and its projects, especially compared to previous years. According to the BCU, Uruguayan Central Bank, the economy grew 11.6% during 2008 which is far above its neighboring countries, especially the “big ones” like Argentine and Brazil which grew around 4% to 5%. So the year was very positive especially from June to September.

In 2008 imports increased by 58% when comparing Dec 2008 to Dec 2007. It is common to hear among local people that “we still don’t feel the international crisis”. We are in the summer season and especially January was an important month for the Tourist sector and related projects. This year we received more than 80 international cruises arriving to our harbors, to include Queen Mary 2, one of the largest ones in the world, and several others from the most important cruises companies globally. That implied groups of thousands of tourists visiting our capital and one of the most important beaches in South America as it is “Punta del Este”, located at one hour and a half away from the capital.

What all of this means for projects in Uruguay and what we expect as we move forward? Talking about Punta del Este, this is a great example of very good projects held in the construction industry in the recent years in Uruguay. In the past few years an incredible quantity of world class buildings was constructed in the Punta del Este beach bay. Companies like Campiglia, a national construction company, are not only executing new projects for buildings in beaches, but also important projects for the country as it is the case of the new international airport terminal (pictured at right) which is located in Montevideo. A USD 37.416.000 project for a building of 45.000 m2.
