Project Management Update from Omaha

By Ted Koval

Projects and Project Management Abound in Omaha

During the US Presidential campaign, and as part of the debate to reinvigorate the US economy, it was suggested that massive infrastructure projects could be a means of getting people back to work and infusing the economy with much needed revenues.  The plan is similar to the FDR public works program in the 1930’s and 40’s in the USA where an out-of-work workforce was set about building the nation’s infrastructure and other large projects to get the economy moving again.

While some across the USA await word from Washington, DC on the green light for the potential release of funds for these massive federal projects, project managers in Omaha are already seeing the payoff in terms of jobs and quality of life through investment in major projects.

Omaha, home to four Fortune 500 companies (and 8 Fortune 1000 companies) is on the move.  According to Rod Moseman, VP of Economic Development at the Greater Omaha Economic Development Partnership, investment in large scale projects in Omaha, and just across the Missouri river in Council Bluffs, Iowa, offer opportunities for job growth.  This growth provides the potential for project managers to utilize their skill set in helping to build Omaha, especially if they have a diverse background in project management.  Over the last several years, according to Moseman, investment in Omaha projects has exceeded $2 Billion (US).

“There’s stability here in Omaha,” says Moseman.  “Job growth in Omaha is positive.”  While many cities around the country are grappling with the effects of the economic downturn, Omaha, according to Moseman, fairs well.
