REGIONAL REPORT

Ethiopia Today

By Getachew Teklemariam Alemu

Strategic Importance of Project Management in Ethiopia

As a nation, Ethiopia is one of the nations having a long history. The history has circumscribed a lot of developments (social, political, cultural and technological) within it, which has provided the country the picture that it has now. In most of its parts, the history has been all about people sacrificing their life for independence, self-determination, dignity and self-worth. Sometimes it has been a history of power struggles between brothers, while at other times it has been of external interventions. No matter what, this history is our source of being Ethiopians, and proud Africans.

Provided that history has inherited us a nation which is poor and underdeveloped with people who are poor, illiterate and malnourished, it is indubitable that ensuring fast and sustainable economic development shall be at the forefront of our agendas. Nevertheless, this development will only be vigorous if it could be executed in a balanced way; both horizontally and vertically. Vertically, everyone in the society from a company shareholder to a janitor has to get his own share of benefit from the progress. Horizontally, every region, zone, woreda, and Keble has to get its share of the national cake. Besides, working towards decentralization of service provision, devolution of power to the lower governmental units, and fighting against any sort of inequality has to be given due emphasis.
