UK Project Management Round Up

Energy Projects Blown Away

UK energy policy is under further pressure as a major investor in wind power slashed its investment programme. This comes shortly after after ministers backed a string of huge gas-fired power stations, prompting concern that the Government cannot fulfill its promise of a green energy revolution.

According to press reports, Shell and BP have shelved or pulled out of renewable energy projects, including a £3 billion project for 341 turbines in the Thames Estuary, claiming that Government policies prevent any possibility of making a profit on their alternative energy projects. In Shell press release, chief executive Jeroen van der Veer, said that Shell, the world's second-largest non-state-controlled oil company, was planning to drop all new investment in wind, solar and hydrogen energy.

“I don't expect them to grow much at Shell from here, due to portfolio fit and the returns outlook compared to other opportunities,” he said, speaking at the Anglo-Dutch group's annual strategy briefing.
