![]() Project Management News from Argentina
News from the PM Profession News about Local Programs and Projects Argentina faces expectation moments due to the worldwide economical situation. Also, Ms. Cristina Fernandez´ government does not show a clear path which increases uncertainty. However, the country seems to continue its economical growth and the few international investors in the country, most of them Brazilians, are still launching projects. Proof of this dual situation are the two main notices regarding projects that came from the Presidential office this month: First, the high speed train project between Buenos Aires and Rosario has been posponed due to the delicate situation of the french bank Natixis, finantial agent of the loan. This project has been strongly supported by Ms. Fernandez but very questioned by most of the Argentinean citizens due to its high cost and also to the fact that it will join two cities that already count with different transport medias while there are many cities of the country that lack adequate transport medias. UK Project Management
Round Up
By Miles Shepherd
The Economic Crunch begins to bite
Amid reports of world renowned banks failing and governmental intervention in national financial institutions, the impact of the global credit crunch on projects has not been fully reported. While there is a slow down in many project based business sectors, such as house building and construction generally, there have been few reports of projects being directly affected. However, the London Olympics programme reports two problems. First, a lack of skilled workers is causing work to fall behind schedule. A fast track training scheme is being implemented to develop basic construction skills.
The Times newspaper reports (23 Sep) that the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the London Development Agency and other partner organisations are spending £20 million on increasing the skills of British construction workers to meet the needs of the Olympics – this represents nearly a quarter of their training budget for Games. This skills shortage is exacerbated by the return of migrant workers from Eastern Europe to their home countries. Andrew Teacher, spokesman for the British Property Federation was quoted in the Times as believing likely that British builders laid off from the private sector would move across to fill the gaps in public sector building projects
More worryingly, loans needed to fund building projects have dried up. Recent newspaper reports claim that funding for a £400 million media centre is threatened by the lending problems. Other projects are also reported to be experiencing funding problems. Planners are struggling to fund the £1 billion Athletes Village, the largest single component of the construction programme. According to the Times, without private financing, the Government would be forced to raid the £1 billion contingency fund. Other reports claim the contingency fund to be around £2 billion and that it has all been committed.

Update on Projects & Project Management in New York
By Lawrence Suda
Google makes getting around New York City easier
The Internet giant has teamed with the MTA for online transit service.
New York’s commuter transit system just got a little easier to navigate. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Google Inc. have unveiled a new online service to help customers find their way around the region’s web of buses and trains.
The new web site, which went live on September 23, provides point-to-point public transportation information and navigation across all of New York’s subway, bus and rails systems. The free online transit service can be accessed from the MTA Web site as well as Google Maps and Google Transit sites. The Mountain View, Calif.-based search giant is funding the site, which does not carry advertisements.
The Google Transit service is the first New York online transit guide to include information from all regional transportation systems: Long Island Bus, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, New Jersey and New York Transit, the Port Authority’s AirTrain and Staten Island Ferry. It also includes street-level views, photos of popular destinations, search function for local businesses and time schedules.
More people—8 million to 9 million—take mass transit each day than fly on airplanes in a year, noted Governor David Paterson during a morning press conference at Grand Central Station introducing the service.
The MTA, which faces mounting fiscal challenges, has been using the Internet to encourage New Yorkers and tourists to boost their use of public transportation. About two years ago, the MTA launched Trip Planner, a local online transit guide which includes only the New York City subway and bus maps and directions.
The Google service was two years in the making, according to Tom Sly, Google’s new business development manager. Google Transit launched in 2005 and since has provided transportation information for 70 cities in 10 different countries, including major cities such as Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco.
