Poverty…Work…Satisfaction…PMO It was Friday, the last office day of the week. I enter my office early at 8:20 am. I know it is early, but it is better that being late. Actually my dad was the one who made me wake up early (6:00 AM) in the morning, as I have a trend of exercising before anything else. By the time that I got up from my bed, my neighborhood was totally asleep. The cloudy sky was wrestling with the natural forces in its wish to shower onto the rusted corrugated iron roof of my neighborhood. I asked myself a couple of questions, which may actually seem ridiculous. Does this cloud know that it is wishing to fall onto the roofs of the poorest people on earth? Why do we become poor? Can anybody imagine that up to 5 people could sleep on a small bed in my old, tarnished, jumbled and poor neighborhood? Is life really fair to let some people pay thousands of dollars for sleep-therapy since they cannot get asleep on their sumptuous bed surrounded by custom-designed pillows, while others are enjoying it in the middle of a mess? What is a question worth if it cannot be answered, though? What is a human being worth if it cannot get the fundamental human necessities? What is life worth if it could not be given the value that it should be accorded? What will history preach about my poor neighborhood after 40 or 50 years? Emmmmm…No Answer! Project Management Update from the UK By David Shannon Project Management Profile There is so much happening within the world of project management that we sometimes fail to lift our eyes over the parapet and appreciate the rapid changes in our context. We have however been encouraged to do so: The 5th edition of the APM’s BoK urges sensitivity to and understanding of contextual factors including PESTLE (Political, Economic, Social, Technical, Legal, and Environmental) and organisational capability and maturity, structure, processes and resources. PMI’s PMBOK third edition identifies critical inputs as being enterprise environmental factors and organisational process assets. Several recent events illustrate how the overall context for the practice of our profession is changing. Sometimes, it seems, we should stop proselytizing and simply respond to the welcome recognition that project management is achieving. Read complete report in English

Project News from Montreal PM Profession News Vacation time: an opportunity to demonstrate good project planning skills. It’s summer. The beautiful Montreal’s weather in this time of the year encourages many professionals to take one or two weeks off to enjoy life with their families far away from their current projects. Even if accompanied by their smart phones, it’s true that projects slow down because of the unavailability of different stakeholders. This is a great opportunity for project managers to show a good planning ability. Not only because many human resources are not available to execute their activities, but, most important, because they don’t take their vacations at the same time. Decision-making processes become more difficult and the tasks are executed more slowly. Project managers: this is the time to show that you know how to plan well your projects! This time of the year brings to the projects new events that must taken into account in the planning (vacations!), some new constraints (the lack of resources) and some new risks (after all, not everybody decides when to stay two weeks far from the company with much time in advance). ![]() Current Events Affecting Projects & Project Management in Nigeria By O. Chima Okereke, PhD
Issues on Energy Products, and their Prospects Nigeria is the sixth biggest oil producer in the world, with a capacity to export over 3 million barrels per day but the current production figure of about 1 million barrels per day belies that capacity. The production level has dropped since May 2008 owing to persistent disruptions and damages to pipelines by militants. It is not just the foreign earning from oil production and exportation that is suffering; there are also issues with petroleum products locally. Hike in Price of Diesel On Wednesday, July 23, at the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Alhaji Bashir Borodo, the president of MAN, lamented the increase in the cost of diesel from N105 ($0.8) to N200 ($1.5) per litre in three months; ninety percent (90%) increase. (This should be about ($0.80) to about ($1.5) per litre; using an exchange rate of N130 as equivalent to $1.00.) He therefore called on the government to intervene to reduce the price of diesel and save the industrial sector and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from collapse. Before then and earlier in the year, the government had stopped the increase in the official petroleum price following the removal of a part of the petroleum subsidy. This was a very welcome move as it forestalled the imminent increase in price of petroleum products. Read complete report in English
