Something Good
is Happening in Colombia

By Ana Maria Rodriguez

During the last few weeks I visited my home country Colombia, after more than two years since my last visit. Although I was aware that the situation in the country was much better now, I was truly amazed with the positive changes I found in Colombia! I stayed most of the time in Bogotá and also travelled to towns close to it, and everywhere it was evident that the country is growing, projects are being developed everywhere. This is a complete different situation from the one from past years when the growth of guerrilla blocked the growth of the country. I have to say that something good is happening in Colombia, mainly due to the effort of its president Alvaro Uribe.

Alvaro Uribe was first elected as president of Colombia in 2002; then, the country was covered by fear due to the high levels of violence from guerrillas and paramilitary groups. The economy was having a minimum growth, unemployment was reaching 17% of the population, 10% of the population had emigrated. Very little foreign investment was present in the country, and beautiful places like the Caribbean beaches or the Amazon Jungle have been pulled out of all tourist plans for overseas visitors; Colombian citizens were also scared of travelling through their country. This was all due to the critical security issues and to the very high levels of kidnapping. The national self -esteem was destroyed.

Recent National Elections in Nigeria

By O. Chima Okereke, PhD

The general elections have been held in Nigeria in April. The results have met with conflicting receptions in the different parts of the country. They are reportedly unacceptable to the international community, especially the Western observers. Hopefully, a handover may take place on the May 29th. This will be epoch-making if it goes through because it will be the first time a civilian government hands over to another in our country.

I think it is being unrealistic to condemn it completely without taking cognizance of the normal conduct and practices in our country. It is indeed being overly optimistic and idealistic to expect a free and fair election without the inbuilt and institutionalised systems to deliver it. It takes a country with the checks and balances to ensure and achieve accountability and transparency in its normal political and business activities to achieve a free and fair election.

The Regional Political Crisis and the State of Affairs for Project Management in Romania

Florin Gheorghiu, PMP

When Wall Street sneezes the rest of the World gets flu. It is an old known metaphorical view of how some apparently non related things can affect each other in various ways. This is true when we report over the regional political crisis that rules the Romanian political landscape during the last month. An endless string of allegations thrown by the parties have ultimately ended with a major political crisis affecting the entire social life, capital investors’ patience, and making the public observing the scandals in the newspapers rather than focusing on a serious problems.

The elected President was allegedly found responsible by the Special Committee appointed by the Parliament Chambers of overruling and exceeding the Constitutional limits of mandate. In return the acting President has tried to throw everything onto the Lower Chamber and Senate Representatives, accusing the political elite of corruption and of forming of groups of special interest which work against the citizens’ interest

The Impact of Project Management on Business Performance in the Portuguese Market

Alexandre Rodrigues

Project Management is nowadays a competitive advantage that no organization can spare, being recognised as the main factor influencing productivity in an increasingly global economy.  But why is this emergent management discipline so important to countries like Portugal?

The answer is simple: modern business models are based on the on-going implementation and management of change.  The Portuguese economy is composed by a small set of large economic groups, some of which of international origin, and by a large number of small-medium enterprises (SMEs), to whom it is mandatory – more than ever before – that they respond effectively to the challenges of change.
