New PM book by Morris & Sember - PROJECT MANAGEMENT THAT WORKS - published in USA by AMACOM

AMACOM, the books publishing wing of the American Management Association, has announced the publication of a new project management book by Rick Morris and Brette McWhorter Sember, entitled Project Management That Works: Real-World Advice on Communicating, Problem-Solving, and Everything Else You Need to Know to Get the Job Done.

According to the AMACOM news release, Project management is one of the fastest-growing occupations in the world. With more than 265,000 members in 170 different countries, the Project Management Institute (PMI) reports that its membership has grown exponentially in the last 10 years. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor predicts the popularity of this profession will continue to rise at an incredible rate over the next six years.

But while many of these new managers know how to plan a successful project in theory, very few have the practical tools they need to get the job done when something goes wrong. Successful project managers must not only meet client expectations, but also complete the project within a specific time frame and a specific budget—no matter how challenging the circumstances.

Rick A. Morris, a project manager for several Fortune 500 companies, sought after speaker at PMI conferences, and author of PROJECT MANAGEMENT THAT WORKS: Real-World Advice on Communicating, Problem-Solving, and Everything Else You Need to Know to Get the Job Done, believes that there is a significant gap between the principles of project management and their actual application in many corporate environments.

In PROJECT MANAGEMENT THAT WORKS, Morris and Sember provide readers with advice they need to handle unreasonable deadlines and difficult projects, including the tools to:

  • communicate with their teams

  • lget their teams to function well

  • understand The Iron Triangle of Cost, Schedule, and Quantity

  • run fewer and more productive meetings

  • determine the level of detail that the stakeholder wants

  • use their personality type to improve their communication style

  • cope with different personality types

  • turn around failing projects

  • utilize data properly to make emotional conversations unemotional

  • know when a project is really done

  • learn how to accept and work within the limitations of the project and corporate culture.

Filled with practical examples of proven strategies that the authors have used to great effect, PROJECT MANAGEMENT THAT WORKS will ensure that no one has to go through the same painful learning curve. This book is intended to help new hires excel in strategic areas—without all the stress and frustration.

Rick A. Morris is a project manager for several Fortune 500 companies and is a sought-after public speaker on project management. Brette McWhorter Sember is an attorney who has written more than 30 books including The Essential Supervisor’s Handbook. She lives in Clarence, New York.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT THAT WORKS: Real-World Advice on Communicating, Problem-Solving, and Everything Else You Need to Know to Get the Job Done, by Rick A. Morris with Brett McWhorter Sember; ISBN-13: 978-0-8144-0988-6; list price US$24.95; 224 pages, published by AMACOM in the United States. Visit AMACOM online at www.amacombooks.org.
