PMI Bogota Chapter Launches Campaign to Host PMI's Global Congress in Latin America 2008 in Cartegena de Indias The Bogota chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) has launched this week a campaign to obtain international support for its idea of hosting the 2008 Global Congress Latin America in Colombia, specifically at Cartagena de Indias. Mr. German Bernate, president of the Bogota chapter, made the offer to Mr. Gregory Balestrero, CEO of PMI, during the last GCLA in Santiago, Chile, during the fist week of November. He has also sent a formal request to the PMI Global Congress organizers and to the PMI Board of Directors to consider the possibility. Now, the Bogota chapter is contacting media and sending informal invitations to Latin American PM’s announcing the desire to host the 2008 congress at Cartagena. Even though locations for 2008 North America, EMEA and Asia PMI’s global congresses have already being announced, the location for the Latin America global congress is not known yet. Hence, the PMI Bogota chapter is making an important effort to get attention to its proposal.
As stated by Mr. Bernate, “we want to announce to the whole world that Colombia is a country full of energy and progress, and that Colombians want to contribute to the growth of the nation and of the world.” Mr. Bernate makes emphasis on the opportunity that the GCLA will represent for showing the best side of Colombia, a country with a sustained growth of its gross domestic product and growing levels of foreign investment.
Cartagena de Indias, the proposed city for hosting 2008 GCLA, is a beautiful and magic city founded in 1533 beside the Caribbean Sea. During 1700’s a large set of walls was built in order to protect the city from pirates, which remains as one of the most impressive testimonies of colonial times. Inside the “ciudad amurallada” (walled city) a wonderful evident testimony of history is available: it offers a varied architecture, mainly of a colonial style, but there are also republican and Italian style buildings. Most of them has been maintained and reconstructed in order to keep the 17th century aspect of the city. Cartagena is a UNESCO World Heritage site, considered by many as the most magic city in the Caribbean. Cartagena is a major tourist port, offering very comfortable hotels and convention centers, both in the historic part and in the modern area of the city.
Colombia is the northwestern most country of South America. It is the fourth largest country in South America (after Brazil, Argentina and Peru), being a territory one of physical contrasts, ranging from the towering, snow capped peaks of the Andes to the Amazon River basin and to Caribbean beaches. Colombia is the South American country with the second largest population (after Brazil), having a population of 45 million people. The country has recently signed a Free Trade Agreement with the United States of America, which is expected to increase investment in the development of products for export, such as flowers, fabrics, and of course flowers, within others. Four PMI Global Congresses are held each year, in the Asia Pacific region, Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA) region, in North America and in Latin America. PMI Global Congresses are often the largest project management related events in the world and include educational seminars, tracks of professional paper presentations, vendor exhibitions, networking and social events, and professional meetings. PMI also conducts regional leadership meetings in connection with each Global Congress, at which leaders of PMI components, committees and operations staff meet on PMI business.
