Lessons Learned Log

A personal Story from the UK
By Gary Lester

Prior to my current job, I worked for 5 years at a fairly large online gaming organisation as a technical project manager. It was my first project management role when I joined them, having come from a technical support/Oracle DBA/Unix Sys admin background. I was very happy to move into a new discipline and learn new skills and as the job went, I was happy for about 3 years.

It all changed with the changeover of a new boss who for unknown reasons, had it in for me from day 1. The effect was pretty immediate where I started to feel no support for what I was doing and a general tendency to undermine me whenever possible. For the next 2 years I was pretty unhappy and over that time looked for a new job, but found it difficult due to the fact that I had spent time learning a new product (which had its own niche market).  I wanted to stay with that product given the amount of effort it took to master it. Over that 2 year period I decided that all I could do was learn as much as possible from the projects I was working with.
