Securing, Stabilizing & Rebuilding Iraq: GAO Report Available

The Government Accountability Office of the US government has published its recent and somewhat controversial report in the USA entitled Securing, Stabilizing and Rebuilding Iraq: Iraqi Government Has Not Met Most Legislative, Security and Economic Benchmarks. The report was posted and made available to the public on 4 September 2007 at http://www.gao.gov/cgi-bin/getrpt?GAO-07-1195.

According to the GAO report, the Iraqi government has not met 11 of 18 key benchmarks established by the US congress, has partially met four and has full met only three, as of August 30, 2007. Overall, the report finds that key legislation has not been passed, violence remains high, and it is unclear whether the Iraqi government will spend $10 billion in reconstruction funds.

The Iraqi government has met only one of eight legislative benchmarks and two of nine security benchmarks. With regard to the reconstruction budget, preliminary data indicates that about $1.5 billion of central ministry funds has been spent as of July 15, 2007.

A copy of the GAO report can also be found here. A summary can be found at http://www.gao.gov/highlights/d071195high.pdf.
