Keller Graduate School of Management announces project management survey results from PMI Global Congress

DeVry University's Keller Graduate School of Management has announced the results of a project management survey it administered at the PMI® Global Congress 2007 – North America in Atlanta, Georgia, USA in October.

The survey examined the perceptions of project management leaders and professionals on emerging needs, trends and expectations impacting educational providers. The survey also gathered information regarding the relevance of project management skills in today’s marketplace and explored corporate and organizational expectations affecting project management.

Among the findings:

  • PMP® certification is becoming increasingly important or required for key positions and employees, largely due to the need to manage complex projects in a global marketplace, according to 76 percent of respondents.

  • Having an advance degree or graduate certificate in project management is the most critical to an organization’s success in developing effective project managers, according to 50 percent of respondents; followed by corporate educational programs at 32 percent.

  • Flexible scheduling and program reputation are the most important requirements to students choosing a project management learning and development solution.

  • More than half of the respondents attend seminars, meetings and network to stay current in the project management industry, while 40 percent read articles online or in print.

"Taking the pulse of today’s project management leaders is part of our ongoing commitment to the PM profession and helps ensure that our curriculum remains responsive to today’s PM leaders and professionals," said David Overbye, PMP, Dean of Curriculum, Keller Graduate School of Management.

For more than 30 years, DeVry University’s Keller School of Management has delivered relevant, practical graduate education to thousands of students, helping them transform their skills and succeed in their careers. PMForum launches Project Management Governance
& Oversight Advisory Services

PMForum, Inc. has announced that the company has launched a new service for large programs and projects, especially those with global scope and impact. The company also recently announced that it has been selected to provide senior project management advisory services on a global security initiative for the US government. Services on that project include review of the project management information system being developed for the program and other PM related issues requested by the program management team. To see that announcement, click here.

According to David Pells, PMForum President and Managing Editor of PM World Today, “There is a growing need for independent advisory, governance and oversight support on major governmental programs, and large industrial projects that impact the public. With a global network of leading project management authorities, PMForum is now in a position to start helping some of those organizations and programs. Independent oversight is an important element of the project management maturity process.”

Miles Shepherd, David Pells, Russ Archibald and Wayne Abba

In addition to Mr. Pells, initial participants on the PMForum Advisory team include Wayne Abba, widely recognized global authority on earned value management (EVM) in both industry and government; Russ Archibald, PMI Fellow, APM (UK) Fellow, and a Global Advisor for PMForum with nearly 50 years of experience in a wide range of projects and industries and widely recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on modern project management; and Miles Shepherd, past president and chair of both the Association of Project Management (APM) in the UK and the International Project Management Association (IPMA), APM Fellow [Honorary], and also a leading and widely recognized figure in the global PM community. Mr. Shepherd is also an advisor and correspondent for PMForum in the UK.

The advisory, governance, and oversight services offered by PMForum are distinctly different from the usual services provided by consultants and trainers in the field of program and project management. These services enable a diversified team of senior advisors to evaluate – independently – the project management governing policies, strategic approaches, operational practices, and information systems that are in use or under development within complex organizations. This is accomplished through relatively short-term, intensive team meetings with cognizant executives and managers plus document reviews within the benefiting organizations. The resulting findings and recommendations, when accepted, are then implemented by others.

APM 2007 Project of the Year Award goes to BAE Systems

Reported by Miles Shepherd in London, UK

The Association for Project Management (APM), the main project management professional society in the United Kingdom (UK), has announced that the 2007 Project of the Year Award has been won by BAE Systems for the Availability Transformation Tornado Aircraft Contract (ATTAC), a new and innovative solution developed for the Royal Air Force (RAF) Tornado Fleet. The award was presented at a glittering ceremony on Tuesday 30th October at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London on the first evening of APM’s two-day national Project Management Conference.

APM’s Project of the Year award goes to the company with a project delivered within the UK whose outcomes and results aligned most closely to its objectives, completed or successfully commissioned during the year. The focus is on the project, the difficulties encountered and how they were overcome, along with the success of the final outcome, measured in terms applicable to the project. Successful projects deliver results for the customer and the stakeholders, as well as the project itself.

Projects turn visions into reality, and project management achieves that reality effectively and efficiently to the benefit of all. Through the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques, it should be demonstrated that the requirements of the project can be met. Runners up this year included Project Kearsley by Siemens and the Thirlmere Aqueduct Refurbishment by MWH. This year’s APM Project of the Year award was sponsored by Siemens.

The APM Project Management Awards reward and celebrate project management successes and reflect the invaluable contribution project management and project managers make in all sections of society.

Report from World Project Management Week in Singapore

Reported by: Paul Giammalvo in Jakarta, Indonesia

November 12 - 19 saw approximately 140 global practitioners of project management converge in Singapore to enjoy World Project Management Week http://www.wpmweek.com/

World Project Management week, organized and hosted by EventCorp, wpmweek@eventcorp.com.au is the only meeting for portfolio, asset, program, operations and project managers that is UNAFFILIATED with any specific organization. Because of this independence, the WPM event attracts some of the on-the-edge thinkers- those who do not subscribe to any single methodology, body of knowledge or affiliation, but are willing and eager to explore many different approaches.

As this event tends to attract those at the periphery, and ample evidence supports the conclusion that most breakthroughs happen outside the mainstream, (at the edge of chaos), many of the papers presented push the envelope of “outside the box” thinking. By encouraging cross fertilization of ideas and philosophies, especially pertaining to the integrative roles and responsibilities between portfolio/asset managers, program or operations managers and project managers, the outcomes from WPM Week stand as important indicators of pending changes and future directions project management may likely take.

Some of the highlights of this event:

  1. Purely by coincidence (or some might say, serendipity?) four different speakers (Key note speaker, Bill Stewart, CEO of the Project Leadership Group http://www.pmlg.com/
    Alicia Aitken, Human Systems, http://humansystems.net/EnewsJan06.htm ;
    Patrick Weaver, Mosaic Systems http://www.mosaicprojects.com.au/Company_People.html and Dr. Paul Giammalvo, PTMC/APMX www.getpmcertified.com ) through different research approaches, each concluded separately and independently that project managers are NOT strategists, but the implementers of strategies created or established by either the operations/program manager OR the portfolio/asset managers. Bill Stewart summed it up very nicely by explaining that “Project Managers are more like the Majors, Captains and Lieutenants in the military- that we are “heads down” people, charged with executing tactically what others higher than us have defined as part of a grand strategy, strategy or grand tactics.” Likewise, Dr. Giammalvo, building on previous work by Dr. Parvis Rad and Dr. Ginger Levin, and using AACE’s Integrated Portfolio, Program and Project Management Methodology, www.aacei.or/tcm, highlighted the importance of linking the grand strategies of asset/portfolio managers (the Generals to use Bill Stewarts military analogy) to the organizational strategies and grand tactics of the operations/program managers (The Colonels and Lt Colonels) with the responsibility to execute the strategies and grand tactics falling to the field grade officers. (Majors, Captains and Lieutenants) This indicates a clear trend away from many who are touting project managers as being responsible for strategic development, not implementation.

  2. Danelle Jones, danelle.a.jones@gmail.com in collaboration with incoming AIPM President Dr. Bill Young, http://www.aipm.com.au/html/default.cfm offered an interesting perspective building on the growing appreciation that project management is NOT a profession, and may well never become one. Danelle concluded her presentation “Turf Wars: Is Project Management a Profession?”, with the following recommendations: “After consideration of the above theoretical and practical aspects of professionalization, the recommendations below have developed as a potential way forward for practitioners:
    a.) Choose to adopt or develop a fiduciary responsibility towards Clients and the community at large, to earn respect and develop trust;
    b.) Consider the standard of care that a careful, prudent practitioner would exercise in a given situation or circumstances; and
    c.) Seize the opportunity to earn professional status through consistent performance, which achieves and exceeds the needs of Clients. “

  3. Building on the conclusions from Danelle Jones, Dr. Bill Young, Patrick Weaver and many others, consensus was that the knowledge based credentials are fast becoming passé. That the only meaningful measurement of the relative professionalization of the practitioner derives from demonstrated competency, and not simply passing any written exam. Towards that end, the Global Alliance for Project Performance Standards www.globalpmstandards.org was well represented at WPM, with BoD members Professor Lynn Crawford, Bond University http://www.bond.edu.au/index.html and Human Systems, http://humansystems.net/EnewsJan06.htm; Dr. Paul Giammalvo , PTMC/APMX www.getpmcertified.com; Alicia Aitken, Human Systems, http://humansystems.net/EnewsJan06.htm ; and Professor Andrew Leicester, Bond University http://www.bond.edu.au/index.html

To conclude, to find out more about participating in World Project Management Week in 2008, visit the website http://www.wpmweek.com/ or contact Professor Andrew Leicester, Bond University, aleicest@bond.edu.au . WPM is especially interested in attracting those who believe they offer some new or unique thinking or approaches in project management as a delivery system.
