Happy Birthday, Vladimir!

It has been a great pleasure and an honor for me to know Vladimir Voropajev since 1992. Over the last 17 years, Vladimir has become an advisor, mentor and teacher to me, and I am honored to count him as a friend and colleague. On this important occasion, I would like to recall a few stories from our long association and share some memories and images of professor Vladimir Voropajev.

I first learned of Professor Voropajev and about the Russian Project Management Association SOVNET in 1991. At that time, I was the president of the Dallas/Ft Worth Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI), which was holding its annual conference in Dallas that year. As the host PMI leader and chair of the international relations committee on the PMI’91 project team, I invited SOVNET leaders (to whom I was introduced to by the late Brian Fletcher) to come to Dallas to attend PMI’91. Unfortunately, they were unable to obtain a US visa in time to do so, but in return, I was invited to Moscow.
