How to find Project Managers for big projects? Panel discussion planned for IPMA World Congress in Rome

The project management team for the 22nd IPMA World Congress on Project Management – ROMA 2008 Project Management to Run – has announced several major panel discussions for the November World Congress. The IPMA 22nd World Congress on Project Management will be held in Rome, Italy during 9-11 November 2008. For information, visit www.ipmaroma2008.it.

According to the latest congress announcement, a Panel discussion on finding project managers for big projects and programmes in the oil & gas, petrochemicals and engineering/construction sectors will be held in Rome.

The number and the size of big projects in the oil and gas industry are increasing and the engineering companies have difficulty in assigning the right project manager to these jobs. Why? Because there are too many projects ongoing at the same time and few project managers have the experience to manage the problems and the risks of a multimillion dollar project.

How do the Engineering Companies and the Project Owners intend to overcome this difficult situation? The topic will be discussed in a round table by top Managers of Engineering Companies and Oil and Gas Corporations together with project management and human resources experts.

The Panel moderator will be Dr. Martin Barnes, APM President and past Executive Director of the Major Projects Association in the UK. Panel members will be: Veikko Välilä, IPMA President; Umberto della Sala, CEO of Foster Wheeler, and several other top managers of oil and engineering companies. For large EPC companies or those looking for experienced project managers, this will be an opportunity to discuss your needs with others in the industry and in the project management profession with experience in this area.

The 22nd IPMA World Congress and Exhibition will be held at the Palazzo dei Congressi near the heart of downtown Rome, during 9-11 November 2008. The “ROMA 2008 – Project Management to Run” World Congress will include keynote speeches, 12 streams of presentations over three days with discussions and presentations on various programme and project management topics, and an international exhibition of products and services. Over 1,000 participants from the 45+ countries represented by IPMA membership are expected to attend, making it one of the largest project management events in the world this year.

For registration, schedule and other information, visit the conference website at www.ipmaroma2008.it.

It is now a major breeding ground for high-profile talents and important base in science and technology research. Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name "Tsinghua School". In less than 100 years, Tsinghua University has witnessed and shared the hardships and glories of the Nation. The university's motto of "Self-discipline and Social Commitment" has inspired many generations of Tsinghua teachers and students to struggle for the prosperity of China. Now, striving to build Tsinghua University into a world-class university by its 100th anniversary in 2011 has become the objective of each member of the teaching staff and the student body.

Institute of International Engineering Project Management (IIEPM), Tsinghua University, was established on November 9, 2000, under the support of the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (the present Ministry of Commerce). It is engaged in production, education and research to implement the "Going Out" strategy of the State as well as to cultivate project management talents to meet market demand after China's entry into WTO. The purpose of IIEPM is to promote engineering project management of China and the competence capability of China enterprises in the industry as well as into the international market.

Mary McKinlay to Deliver Keynote Speech at 22nd IPMA
World Congress in Rome in November

The project management team for the 22nd IPMA World Congress on Project Management - ROMA 2008 Project Management to Run - has announced that Mary McKinlay will deliver a keynote speech at the November congress. Mary McKinlay is a Vice President of the International Project Management Association (IPMA) and Managing Director of Mary McKinlay Projects Ltd., UK. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Project Management at ESC Lille in France. The title for Mary's speech is "Where is project management running to...?".

Mary McKinlay has been involved in project management for over 28 years as practitioner, researcher and trainer. Following a degree in Systems Engineering, she started her career working on the Tornado aircraft project and subsequently has worked on many large programmes, from civil aircraft to submarines. A further dimension was added by work on research programmes involving collaboration between industry and academics. Mary is a regular contributor to conferences in UK and overseas and presents on a wide range of PM topics.

Mary served on the Council of the Association for Project Management (APM, UK) from 2001 until 2006. She was an APM delegate to the International Project Management Association until her election as Vice President last year. Having trained in the use of the Project Excellence Model, she has acted as an assessor for the IPMA Awards in 2004 and Lead Assessor in 2005 and 2006. Mary also delivers Assessor Training for the Awards. For the past five years she has been a Judge for the APM, UK Project Awards. Mary is an active member of IoD Kent and a Governor of the University of Greenwich. She is also a member of the PM Ambassadors™ Speakers Bureau and speaks at PM events worldwide. (http://www.pmforum.org/ambassadors/ambassadors.htm#McKinlay)

According to her abstract, "The face of Project Management is changing. The application of project management techniques is being seen in a wider context than ever before. It is recognised that the tools and techniques form just a part of the skills required to manage projects successfully. Indeed Project Management and it’s related disciplines, Programme and Portfolio Management, are out of the starting gate and are running throughout the World, not just in the traditional fields of Engineering and Construction. Project Management has been declared to be a “Life Skill” by a British Prime Minister. Research on the Project Oriented Nation is looking at PM Education as one of the characteristics. Project Management now has serious Higher Education Courses in it’s own right instead of being simply regarded as an optional module to add on to another discipline. There is a lively debate about whether or not Project Management is a profession on the one hand and in the UK the Association for Project Management (APM) is seeking to become a Royal Chartered Institution. Where is it all going and how can we go with it and play a full part in the development of our world."

The IPMA 22nd World Congress on Project Management will be held in Rome, Italy during 9-11 November 2008. According to the "ROMA 2008 - Project Management to Run" project team, with keynote speeches and 12 streams of presentations over three days, as many as 200 presentations on important project management topics can be anticipated.
