Avoiding Disputes - Dr. Martin Barnes to Provide Advice Reported by Miles Shepherd in London The Institute of Civil Engineers, UK, has announced a seminar on the topic of “Avoiding Disputes to Deliver Success”, to be held Monday, 7 April 2008. The event will be held at the ICE offices, One Great George Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3AA. Cost for the half-day (15:00 – 19:00) event is £50.00 (+ VAT).
On large complex projects it is essential that problems are managed to ensure they do not escalate into full blown disputes. This seminar will look at different management tools and techniques that can be used to ensure that disputes are avoided. It will also present how the Olympic Delivery Authority intends to avoid disputes in the construction of London 2012. Speakers will include Dr Martin Barnes (pictured), President of the Association Project Managers and originator of the New Engineering Contract (NEC), and Anil Mehta, Deputy Head of Logic, Olympic Delivery Authority. The NEC, originally released in 1993, was the outcome of the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers "to lead a fundamental review of alternative contract strategies for civil engineering design and construction with the objective of identifying the needs for good practice". The second edition was issued in 1995 as the Engineering Construction Contract (EEC). The contract suite is specifically geared around the needs of projects and actively encourages a less confrontational approach to contracts. Martin is also a global advisor for PMForum and a PM Ambassador™; his background can be seen at http://www.pmforum.org/ambassadors/ambassadors.htm#Barnes. Those unable to make it to the venue can register to attend online at http://event.concepglobal.com/profile/web/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x497975ad.
