Slovenia to host 8th Annual European Academy of Management Conference - Call for Papers

Reported by Miles Shepherd in London, UK

The European Academy of Management (EURAM) has announced their 8th Annual European Academy of Management Conference. This event is the most prestigious of all the management conferences in Europe and regularly attracts all the key management thinkers in Europe and USA. The 2008 event will be held in Slovenia and hosted by the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana and the IEDC-Bled School of Management and co-organised with CEEMAN, the Central and East European Management Development Association.

Lake Bled
one of the two conference sites

Contributions are expected from more than 1.000 management researchers, scholars and practitioners from all over the world. The conference theme is Managing Diversity: European Destiny and Hope.

The Conference programme is structured around 46 tracks, which were selected from 75 track proposals, including 8 generic EURAM tracks. They cover a whole spectrum of most interesting and exciting management research areas, including those that address key issues related to the transition processes and change phenomena in general. In previous conferences, there has been a very strong Project Management track and many European researchers are expected to participate in 2008. The PM Track Organising Team of 12 academics from 8 countries includes the editors of IPMA’s International Journal of Project Management and PMI’s Project Management Journal.

University of Ljubljana

This year’s track theme concerns the diversity of management approaches to projects and programmes to satisfy a diversity of aims and interests. In exploring this theme, we wish to encourage empirical and theoretical papers within the following sub-themes:

  • How do projects and programmes act as processes for restructuring and social transformation?

  • How are programmes and projects manifested as diverse forms of organisation and management processes?

  • How are organisational resources, leadership capabilities, systems and processes configured?

  • How are issues of alignment encompassing broader social and environmental interests and concerning managing diverse internal and external stakeholder interests managed?

Papers should be constructively critical concerning current norms of project management practice, and accessible to a multi-disciplinary audience. Particular attention should be paid to the theoretical roots of the arguments presented. It is intended that the best papers from this track will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Project Management, edited by the co-chairs.

Abstracts are required to be submitted on line by 18 January 2008 at http://www.euram2008.org/CallForPapers.asp The conference itself will be held in Ljubljana and Bled, Slovenia, during 14-17 May 2008.
Conference participants will also have a unique opportunity to discuss with world famous thinkers in management and associated fields:

  • Ichak Adizes, one of the world’s leading authorities on change management

  • Jean-Pierre Lehmann, IMD-Lausanne, Founding Director of the EVIAN Group

  • Slavoj Zizek, world famous Slovenian sociologist, post-modern philosopher and cultural critic

  • Janez Potoènik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, will open the conference with a speech on European research policies to foster diversity and European competitiveness.

It now has become a tradition for EURAM to organise a DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM before the Annual Conference. This year, the colloquium organised jointly by EURAM, EDAMBA and EIASM will be held on 14th May 2008 and hosted by the IEDC, Bled School of Management. Please submit your abstract (500 words), your CV, a short letter of motivation and a letter of recommendation by 15th February 2008. New Date for first 2008 APM Risk SIG Event

Reported by Miles Shepherd in London, UK

Association for Project Management (APM) has announced its first Risk Specific Interest Group (SIG) event for 2008. The SIG has a good track record of event planning but is perhaps best known for its ground breaking guide Project Risk Assessment and Management or PRAM Guide, now in its second revision. The workshop takes place on Thursday 7th February 2008.

The meeting takes place in Bristol (The Watershed, 1 Canon's Road, Harbourside, Bristol BS1 5TX) from 9.00am until 4.00pm. The workshop will examine techniques that can be adopted to increase the chance of meeting project objectives. All sessions are planned to be highly interactive and the day starts with a presentation from David Hillson looking at the potential benefits of interfacing risk and earned value management (EVM) methodologies.

Two further sessions, chaired by Ken Newland and Tony Reid, are again planned to be interactive. Ken will be using case studies, working experience and models to demonstrate Business risks implicit in major contracts. This will have particular emphasis on the planning of the project during the bid stage. Tony will run an interactive session to assess the delegates attitude to innovative behaviour and perception of risk. This is based on a view of the future trends in innovative behaviours in the use of 'creativity and innovation'. Ken and Tony will then bring their two perspectives together for a discussion on how the risks inherent in Innovative behaviours are needed to identify the 'good' risks that are required to be taken to achieve a competitive advantage.

Cost is £45 plus VAT for APM individual members, £55 plus VAT for non APM members, £20 plus VAT for students. This includes lunch and refreshments. Full details are available from http://www.apm.org.uk/eventRisk%20SIG.asp?pdate=0-0&branch=-101

APM recently announced its plans to publish an EVM/Risk Guide and this workshop is the first in a series of planned events prior to its release. APM is particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has experience of adopting a harmonised risk and EVM approach and would welcome views and challenges. Time has been allowed for debate, so if you would like to either question the principles or give your view please join the Risk SIG on 7 February

Project Managers to share experiences at BPUG Congress
in London - February 2008

Reported by Miles Shepherd in the UK

Some of the most experienced managers working on the world's elaborate projects will be sharing their experiences at the Best Practice User Group (BPUG) Congress, to be held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, London, during 6-7 February 2008. Delegates will be taken through a series of hard hitting presentations followed by the chance to network and share experiences at the event’s gala dinner.

Highlights of the congress will be sessions by Hosam Mostafa, Head of Programme Office, Olympic Programme Support Unit and another by Damian Charles, Deputy Director of the Home Office e-Border Programme. The aim of the e-Borders Programme is to create a joined up, modernised border control and security framework for the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, John Spiers, BP’s Refining & Marketing IT Applications Portfolio and Project Management Practice Head, will share his tips on how to build relationships with stakeholders and optimise communication.

“Both PRINCE2 and PMBoK discuss stakeholder engagement and provide excellent tools for analysing who stakeholders are, and for planning actions systematically. However, real stakeholder engagement extends beyond the tools and techniques provided by the methods,” Spiers says.

He will advise delegates that it’s very hard to manage project teams effectively if the people who make up the teams don’t have the necessary skills to communicate well. “People need to be able to react to others on a personal level and a beautiful highlight report simply won’t do this,” he says.

There will be three parallel streams at the event focusing on Strategic programme and project management, tactical programme and project management and risk management. After the day-time programme delegates will get the rare chance to discuss what they’ve learnt and talk about their own projects at the gala dinner. For the full programme and to register visit: www.bpugcongress.com

Best Practice User Group™ (BPUG) aims to be the official user group of choice for projects, programmes and risks. It helps users adopt, use share and shape theapplication of OGC PPM Products. Its members come from both the public and private sectors and include representatives from the MoD, the NHS, local and central government, the financial sector, IT and telecoms. Members typically come from project and programme management roles including project and programme support offices. BPUG in the UK has teamed up with user groups based in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

The conference costs £550 for BPUG members and £750 for non members. Non members also get £100 discount off BPUG membership fees if they join BPUG when registering for the conference. Further details at http://www.usergroup.org.uk.
