CIOB launches training programmes in China

Reported by Miles Shepherd in the UK

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) announced that it is set to finalise an agreement with the Institute of International Engineering Project Management (IIEPM) at Tsinghua University Beijing, and The Research Centre for International Construction Economics and Management in Chongqing University (RCICEM), to deliver training programmes aimed at experienced construction professionals in China.

These programmes will equip candidates with the necessary skills, and training, to develop as a modern construction or project management professional operating in China at national and international levels.

Fabio Casula, The CIOB’s head of international commented: "These programmes have been created to respond to the demands for international professional training in construction in China, where we have a leading position as a professional body.

"China is undergoing massive infrastructure projects across many regions. The World Bank has predicted that by 2015 half of the world’s new building and construction will take place in China; our intention is to establish these programmes and then roll them out in other areas of China in the near future."

According to most reports Tsinghua is placed first of all the universities in China. It attracts the most talented students of the nation and enjoys the best engineering and applied sciences programs in China, occupying a position similar to Berkeley, MIT, and Stanford in the US. Given its standing, admission to Tsinghua is highly competitive. The majority of selected students are national scholars and among the brightest high school graduates in the country. Many of China's top scientists, engineers, politicians and business leaders are among Tsinghua alumni. The current Chinese president, Hu Jintao, is a former Tsinghua student who graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering in 1964.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) was formed in 1834 by a small group of London's master builders as the Builder Society. Its aim was to ‘to uphold and promote reputable standards of building through friendly intercourse, the useful exchange of information and greater uniformity and respectability in business’.
In 1884 the society was incorporated under the Companies Act as The Institute of Builders, with the principal objective ‘to promote excellence in the construction of buildings and just and honourable practice in the conduct of business’. Incorporation by Royal Charter was one of the objectives in the CIOB’s 1975-1980 Five Year Plan and, following extensive consultation with the membership, a petition was submitted to the Privy Council in January 1979. The Institute was granted a Royal Charter on 25 September 1980. CIOB represents on behalf of the public the most diverse set of professionals in the construction industry and has as its role:

  • Promote the importance of the built environment.

  • Lead the industry to create a sustainable future worldwide.

  • Encourage leadership potential.

  • Set the highest standards in quality, safety and qualification.

  • Create an industry where excellence prospers.

Update & Invitation to join the PMUni Network!

Reported by Martina Huemann and Gregor Sellner in Austria

PMUni is an international social network of universities, research and education insti-tutions from different countries such as Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Norway and Slovakia and Austria. The objective is to promote professional education and research in process and project management by exchanging experiences between education and research institutions as well as process and project-oriented compa-nies. The benefits of the PMUni Network include creating cooperation potentials be-tween the partners in education and research and performing education quality management projects and research projects.

Currently the PM Uni Network has 14 partners: BI Norwegian School of Manage-ment, Corvinus University of Budapest, ESC Lille, National School for Political and Administrative Studies, Slovak Technological University, University of Applied Sci-ences BFI Vienna, University of Economics Bratislava, University of Limerick, Univer-sity of Miskolc, University of Pannonia, University of Southern Denmark, University of Zilina, PROJEKTMANAGEMENT GROUP- Vienna University of Economics and Busi-ness Administration, 2B Cognitus. The network participants meet 3-4 times per year, at different venues to exchange information, initiate and work on joint projects.

On May 28th 2008 the PMUni partners and new potential partners met in the PMUni Workshop in Vienna. The workshop was hosted by the WU-Wien, and organized by Roland Gareis and Renate Prantner. This time the focus was on project management education. Some of the participants presented their project management education programs: Lynn Crawford, Bond University (Aus), Christian Malus, University of Applied Sciences Bfi Vienna (A), Pernille Eskerod, University of Southern Denmark (D), Christophe Bredillet, ESC Lille (F), Mihaly Görög, Corvinius University of Budapest, (H), Anne Live Vaagaasar, BI Norwegian School of Management (Nor).

A central part of the workshop was the presentation of the first results of the PMUni project pm education mature. In this research project the maturity model “pm education mature” was jointly developed by the PMUni partners. First pilot analysis of the project management education programs of the PMUni partners were analysed and benchmarked. One of the major benefits of this research project is to encourage and foster the knowledge transfer between the cooperating universities concerning content, working forms, evaluation forms, etc. in project management education programs.

Guests like Roger Aktkinson, Bournemouth University (UK) presented PMNetwork – Project Management for Excellence in Learning & Teaching. Edwin Andrews, PMI (USA) reported on PMI’s planned Education programs and service initiatives. Patrick Fritz, University of Applied Sciences Vorarlberg (A) introduced Jahooda, a project and process management platform launched by his university (http://www.jahooda.org/).
