UT Dallas graduates 29 with Masters Degrees
in Project Management

Reported by A Matt Piazza in North Texas

The University of Texas at Dallas held its commencement ceremonies on December 14, 2007, at the UT Dallas campus in Richardson, Texas, with 29 students graduating with degrees from the UT Dallas Graduate Program in Project Management; 27 graduated with Masters of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Project Management and 2 graduated with Masters of Science (MS) in Project Management. This group was one of the largest graduating classes in the history of the UT Dallas Project Management Program and marked a major milestone, the end of the 10th calendar year of the program.

Some of the graduates afterwards

Altogether, there are 77 students currently enrolled in the program, with another 40-45 being added each year. The MS degree requires 39 semester credits and the MBA 53 whether online or on campus. The first year is devoted to 21 credits of Project Management studies, including methodology and Interpersonal skills such as leadership, management, negotiation,

The second year is devoted to Statistics, MIS, Business Economics, Financial and Managerial accounting and an International study tour. Students may stop here with the Master of Science in Management. The next phase earns them the MBA, and consists of Global Economy, Operations Management, Finance, Marketing and Strategic Management. A total of 21 professors / instructors participate in the program.

Some highlights of the program, according to James Joiner, program director at UT Dallas, include:

  • The same instructor and material are used on line and on campus, giving us excellent consistency

  • The Project Management year is organized into bundles of knowledge, with each bundle containing both methodology and interpersonal skills, thus forming an integrated curriculum

  • Each degree requires a 2-week international study tour, consisting of attendance at class at a foreign University with foreign students and visits to companies to dialog about business and project management.

  • This program was the 4th one in the world to be accredited by the PMI Global Accreditation Center

According to John Baley (pictured), immediate past president of the PMI Dallas Chapter and current Regional Mentor for PMI, who was among the graduates, “The international trip was probably the biggest highlight of the entire MBA program. I enjoyed the classroom atmosphere, but visiting a different country and seeing the different business perspectives was enlightening.”

As for challenges, he added, “There were a lot of team assignments, and the biggest challenge was getting 2 to 4 others on the team to participate in meetings, calls and work. This is similar to what a PM deals with every day, but the difference is that in a project team, there is the matter of salary, and in the class team there is not.”

When asked how it felt to graduate, John stated, “I am glad to have graduated and while I do not feel any different, I am already seeing the benefits of the diploma. In my current position, I am looked at as more in the know on business discussions. And having completed the program, I am now able to spend more volunteer time for PMI, time that I did not have available for the past 28 months.”

The Project Management Program at UT Dallas provides application-oriented education for professionals with significant project, program or general management responsibilities. Established in the Executive Education center in the School of Management, students have the option of earning a Graduate Certificate in Project Management, a Master of Science degree with an emphasis in project management, or a Master of Business Administration degree with project management emphasis. The UT Dallas PM program, originally developed in 1997, is accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and is a PMI Registered Education Provider (PMI R.E.P.). The program is taught by world-class faculty with a blend of industrial project management, consulting and teaching experience. Delivered both on campus and online, the program attracts students from across the United States and around the world. For more information, visit http://som.utdallas.edu/project/.
