Greater Manchester has a population of 2,240,230, the United Kingdom's third largest and most rapidly growing conurbation. Manchester has many sporting connections, including its two Premier League football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City. Manchester was the world's first industrialised city and played a central role during the Industrial Revolution; as the dominant international centre of textile manufacture and cotton spinning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester - cite_note-Cottonopolis-10. Manchester today is a centre of the arts, the media, higher education and commerce. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, usually shortened to the United Kingdom, UK or Britain, is a country located off the northwest coast of mainland Europe. The UK is a political union of the four constituent countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK also has several overseas territories and dependences.
A constitutional monarchy, the UK has close relationships with 15 other “commonwealth realms” that share the same monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II, as head of state. A member of the G8, the UK is a highly developed country with the fourth largest domestic product in the world. With a population of 60 million, it is the third most populous country in the European Union and is a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations (UN), where it holds a permanent seat on the Security Council. The UK is also one of the world’s major nuclear powers and has an economy of approximately US$1.8 trillion. As the successor state to the British Empire, the UK retains influence throughout the world due to the extensive use of the English language, as well as through the world-spanning Commonwealth of Nations, which is ceremoniously led by the UK. The Association of Project Management (APM) in the UK has been one of the world’s leading professional associations for advancing project management for over 30 years and is currently seeking Chartered status. Vienna is the capital of Austria and Austria's primary city; with a metropolitan area population of about 2.3 million. It is the largest city in Austria as well as its cultural, economic and political centre. Vienna lies in the very east of Austria, not far from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an Economist Intelligence Unit study of 127 world cities ranked it third for quality of life. Full of former palaces, museums and historical buildings, Vienna is easily one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Vienna has a long and colorful history. Founded around 500 BC, Vienna was originally a Celtic settlement, becoming a Roman frontier city in 15 BC. During the Middle Ages, Vienna was home of the Babenberg Dynasty and in 1440 became primary residence of the Habsburg dynasties. Vienna grew to become the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and a cultural centre for arts, science, music and fine cuisine.
In 1805, Vienna became capital of the Austrian Empire and continued to play a major role in European and World politics, including hosting the 1815 Congress of Vienna. In 1867 Vienna became the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, Vienna became capital of the First Austrian Republic. Between 1938 and the end of the Second World War, Vienna lost its status as a capital to Berlin. After 1945, Vienna again became the capital of Austria. In the 1970s the Vienna International Centre, a new area of the city (pictured below right), was created to host international institutions. Vienna is now the seat of various United Nations (UN) offices, international institutions and global organizations, including the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Additionally, Vienna is the seat of the UN Commission on International Trade Law's secretariat (UNCITRAL). Alongside the international and intergovernmental organisations, there are dozens of charitable organisations based in Vienna that provide relief and assistance to children and needy people in developing countries. Vienna has been synonymous with music for centuries, and was home to Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Johann Strauss. Today the Wiener Philharmoniker is one of the world's top orchestras, the Vienna Boys' Choir is triumphant wherever it tours, and the Vienna Conservatorium has produced innumerable international award-winners in all musical disciplines. Austria (officially the Republic of Austria) is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Austria is a largely mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. Of the total area of Austria (84 000 km² or 32,000 sq. mi), only 32% is below 500 metres (1,640 ft).
Austria is one of the 10 richest countries in the world with a well-developed market economy and a very high standard of living. Until the 1980s, many of Austria's largest industrial firms were nationalized; in recent years, privatization has reduced state holdings to a level comparable to other European economies. Next to a highly-developed industry, international tourism is the most important part of national economy. Austria became a member of the European Union in 1995, but retained its constitutional neutrality. Germany has historically been the main trading partner of Austria, making it vulnerable to changes in the German economy. Since Austria became a member of the European Union (EU), it has gained closer ties to other EU economies and reduced its economic dependence on Germany. Membership in the EU has also drawn foreign investors attracted by Austria's access to the single European market and proximity to EU aspiring economies. Growth in GDP reached 3.3% in 2006. Austria's population in October 2006 was 8,292,322. Other than Vienna, no other Austrian city has more than 250,000 inhabitants. Ribeirão Preto is a city in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. It is nicknamed “Brazilian California”, because of an economy based on agro-business plus high technology, wealth and sunny weather all year long. With 570,000 inhabitants, Ribeirão Preto is the ninth largest municipality in the state. With a total area of 652.2 km² (251.8 sq mi), it is situated at 313 km (194 mi) from the capital city and at 706 km (439 mi) from Brasília, the federal capital. The city was founded in 1856 by farmers in search of good climate and soil for coffee growing. Eventually the fertile soil of the Ribeirão Preto region allowed the highest crop productivity in Brazil. The high agricultural productivity around Ribeirão Preto rapidly placed the region as the largest alcohol and sugar producer in the world, now responsible for 30 percent of Brazil’s sugarcane alcohol fuel. Besides sugar and alcohol, Ribeirão Preto's major products are orange juice, cotton, rice, meat, dairy products, textiles, machinery, steel, furniture, building materials, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and beer.
São Paulo is a state in Brazil and the major industrial and economic powerhouse of the Brazilian economy. São Paulo has the largest population, the biggest industrial park and the biggest economic production of the country. The capital, São Paulo, is also the largest city in the Americas, with a population of around 22 million. The state of São Paulo has an area of approximately 248,800 km² (95.700 mi²), and a population of about 40 million (21.5% of the population of Brazil), which makes it the most populous country subdivision in the Western Hemisphere. São Paulo state is responsible for approximately one-third of Brazilian GDP. The state's GDP (PPP) consists of 550 billion dollars, making it also the biggest economy of South America and one of the biggest economies in Latin America, second after Mexico. Its economy is based on machinery, the automobile and aviation industries, services, financial companies, commerce, textiles, orange growing, sugar cane and coffee production. As of 2005, Sao Paulo’s share of the Brazilian economy was 33.9%. Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is a country in South America. It is the fifth-largest country by geographical area, the fifth most populous country, and the fourth most populous democracy in the world. The official language is Portuguese. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7,367 kilometres (4577 miles). Brazil borders every nation on the South American continent except Ecuador and Chile. Brazil is crossed by both the Equator and Tropic of Capricorn, and as such is home to a vast array of flora and fauna, natural environments, and extensive natural resources. Its region within the tropics is, by far, the largest of any country.
Brazil occupies roughly half of South America and has one of the world's most extensive river systems, with eight major drainage basins, all of which drain into the Atlantic Ocean. Major rivers include the Amazon, the largest river in terms of volume of water, and the second-longest in the world. The Brazilian population is concentrated along the coastline and in a few large urban centers in the interior. While Brazil is one of the most populous nations in the world, population density drops dramatically as one moves inland. Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until its independence in 1822. Initially independent as the Brazilian Empire, the country has been a republic since 1889. One of the ten largest economies in the world, the country has a diversified middle-income economy with wide variations in development levels and mature manufacturing, mining and agriculture sectors. Technology and services also play an important role and are growing rapidly. Brazil is a net exporter, having gone through free trade and privatization reforms in the 1990s. Brazil's GDP (PPP and Nominal) is the highest of Latin America with large and developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing, and service sectors, as well as a large labor pool. The country has been expanding its presence in international financial and commodities markets, and is regarded as one of the group of four emerging economies called BRIC. According to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, Brazil has the ninth largest economy in the world by purchasing power parity (PPP) and tenth largest at market exchange rates.
