Albert Lester (pictured left) has been tireless in his representation of the construction industry at a number of levels and this is one factor in his award. He has also been a stalwart of the British Standards Institute, where he was a member of the drafting team for BS 6079. "Perhaps one of the most satisfying experiences in one's professional life is to be respected and recognised by one's peers. Geoff Reiss (pictured right) is the founder and current chair of the APM Specific Interest Group in programme management and has been heavily involved in the development of this area since its infancy. Geoff has authored the popular titles Project Management Demystified, Programme Management Demystified and One Project Too Many. David Shannon (pictured left) has been closely associated with APM for many years. He was chair of the Professional Development Board and played a major part in APM’s certification development activities before fulfilling an extremely effective role as acting chief executive in 2000. Reported by: Rob Posener from Sydney

PMForum was well represented at the PMI Global Congress 2008 – Asia Pacific project management conference in Sydney, Australia during 3-5 March 2008. Attending the conference were PMForum international correspondents Carol Dekkers (Florida, USA), Theofanis Giotis (Athens, Greece), Rob Posener (Sydney, Australia), Raju Rao (Chennai, India), and Brenda Treasure (Melbourne, Australia).

Giotis, Rao, Dekkers, Treasure
Where is Rob Posener?

According to Raju Rao, PMForum correspondent from Chennai, India (second from left in photo), “Having attended all the PMI Asia Pacific Congresses so far i.e. Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and now Sydney, I can see growing interest in India among the participants. This matches with the keynote speaker Robyn Meredith's description of India as the Elephant which is slowly trudging on as compared to China as the Dragon which has already made its presence felt.”

According to Carol Dekkers, PMForum correspondent from Florida (second from right in photo), “The world of project management is well and thriving here in Asia. Like Raju, I have attended all of the PMI Asia Pacific congresses, and I thoroughly enjoy the energy, positive outlook, and passion that is alive with project management in this part of the world. For anyone who has yet to attend an Asia Pacific congress, it is time to wake up and discover that the practical application of project management to make the world a better place is in full swing in Asia. I will definitely apply to speak again here next year. Thank you to the Australian organizers including our own PMForum correspondents Brenda Treasure and Robert Posener, and all of their peers, for the hospitality and friendship that made this year's congress another grand success!"

According to Theofanis Giotis, PMF correspondent from Athens, (far left in photo), “It was my first time ever travelling to Australia and my first time to PMI Asia Pacific Global Congress. I was impressed by the number of people attending the Congress, about 800, doubled than last year in Hong Kong. The Congress was very well organized at the Hilton Hotel at Sydney and I have enjoyed the hospitality of the people. The passion for project management was clear in all attendees’ eyes. The keynote speech of Robyn Meredith passed the message across about the importance of the Elephant, India and the Dragon, China. There were plenty of excellent sessions to choose to attend. Next year I will apply to be a speaker at the Congress!”

The PMI Global Congress – Asia Pacific is one of four global congresses organized each year by PMI®, along with congresses in the Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA), Latin America and North America regions. Addis Ababa is the capital and largest city in Ethiopia and the center for economic, educational, financial, industrial and political activity in the country. Addis Ababa is also capital of the African Union. With a Population of 3,627,934 in 2007, Addis Ababa is the world's largest city in a landlocked country. As a chartered city, Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. The city has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages, and Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities.

The economic activities in Addis Ababa are diverse. According to official statistics from the federal government, some 119,197 people in the city are engaged in trade and commerce; 113,977 in manufacturing and industry; 80,391 homemakers of different variety; 71,186 in civil administration; 50,538 in transport and communication; 42,514 in education, health and social services; 32,685 in hotel and catering services; and 16,602 in agriculture. The city has recently been in a construction boom with tall buildings rising in many places. Also, various luxury services have become available and the construction of shopping malls has recently increased. Some people have labeled the city, "the spa capital of Africa."

Presently there are no rural parts to the city; 100% of the inhabitants are considered urban dwellers. Addis Ababa contains 24% of all urban dwellers in Ethiopia. With an estimated area of 530.14 square kilometers (204.69 sq mi), the city has an estimated density of 5,607.96 inhabitants per square kilometre (14,524.5 /sq mi).

According to Wikipedia, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa that borders Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Kenya to the south, Djibouti to the northeast, and Somalia to the east. Ethiopia is one of the oldest nations in the world and Africa's second-most populous nation. It has yielded some of the oldest traces of humanity; recent studies claim that the vicinity of present-day Addis Ababa was the point from which human beings migrated around the world.

Ethiopian dynastic history is traditionally held to have begun with the reign of Emperor Menelik I in 1000 BC. The roots of the Ethiopian state are similarly deep, dating with unbroken continuity to at least the Aksumite Empire (which adopted the name "Ethiopia" in the 4th century) and its predecessor state, D`mt (with early 1st millennium BC roots). Having converted during the fourth century AD, it is also the second-oldest country to become officially Christian, after Armenia. Since 1974, it has been secular and has also had a considerable Muslim community since the earliest days of Islam. Today, Ethiopia has a population exceeding 75 million, with over 80 diverse ethnic groups. The country’s population is very poor.

At 435,071 square miles (1,127,127 km²), Ethiopia is the world's 27th-largest country. Historically a relatively isolated mountain empire, Ethiopia by the mid 20th century became a crossroads of global international cooperation. It became a member of the League of Nations in 1923 and was one of the fifty-one original members of the United Nations (UN). The headquarters of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) is in Addis Ababa, as is the headquarters of the African Union (formerly the Organisation of African Unity), of which Ethiopia was the principal founder. Mounir Ajam to discuss famous UAE mega projects at MegaProjetos 2008 International Symposium in Sao Paulo

Projectlab has announced that Mounir Ajam, a leading project management expert who resides in Dubai and is an international correspondent for PMForum in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will be a featured keynote speaker at the April MegaProjetos 2008 Symposium in Sao Paulo. The MegaProjetos 2008 International Seminar and Exhibition will be held at the Frei Caneca Convention Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil during 3-4 April 2008.

Mounir Ajam (pictured) is a certified PMP – Project Management Professional - and Master of PMI´s Leadership Institute, as well as member of PMI’s 2008 EMEA Congress Project Action Team (CoPAT). He is an international correspondent for PMForum and PM World Today, and author of numerous articles on project management in the fields of engineering, construction, and oil & gas, where he has more than 20 years of experience as an engineer and project manager. Speaker at international events in Europe, USA, Asia and the Middle East, he is the founding president of GPPMA - Global Project and Process Management Association (www.gppma.org), based in Dubai, UAE. He is a co-founder and the CEO of SUKAD FZ-LLC, an Innovation Center, which operates across the Middle East.

Mounir will review some of Dubai’s world famous mega projects, including Burj Dubai, the tallest tower in the world, the famous Palms project (three projects), Dubai Metro, Dubailand, Cultural Village, Masdar Zero Emission City, among many other interesting projects that might not be as famous as Burj Dubai (pictured).

Some of the projects mentioned above, the Palm Projects, the World, Burj Dubai have clearly generated a great deal of global interest but the question is this what Dubai is all about?

The speaker will provide a brief history of this small Emirate (State) that is part of the seven emirates constituting the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The speech will include the above projects and some of the challenges and opportunities that they present to the developers and the community. However, the speaker will not stop here. Behind the glamour, history is being made in Dubai. The speech will not stop at mentioning the tallest, largest, biggest, or all of –est famous projects; rather we will present how this small almost void of natural resources is transforming into an all well round community to work, live, shop, and play in.

Dubai mega projects include an industrial city, a major logistical city with a huge airport, and port facilities that will help make Dubai an export hub rather than just re-export. Dubai is building a healthcare city that includes major global pharmaceuticals and medical institutions such as Harvard. Dubai is working on infrastructure and investing more than 26 billion dollar in new roads, metro system, and water ways. Dubai is building cultural village, sport city, Studio City, Smart City, and the list goes on.

The speaker will conclude with a visioning of the future and Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s big sister and oil rich but that is building a zero emission city and that has brought the University de Sorbonne and the Louvre Museum, among other ventures and their own mega projects.

A mega-project is a special type of project, generally defined as a very large enterprise that requires an investment of over a billion dollars. These projects attract a high level of public attention and political interest due to their strong direct and indirect impact on the community, on the environment and on public and private budgets. More and more mega projects are being developed throughout the world in various industries, like transportation, infra-structure, energy, oil and gas, telecommunications, information technology, aerospace, automotive, heavy construction, international events, defense, research & development, among others.

The International Seminar MegaProjetos 2008 will be the first event in Brazil that brings a wide view of key issues that are involved in major projects. Topics of great relevance to the success or failure of such projects such as management, environmental, financial, technological, organizational, communications, and political aspects will be discussed. Case studies of finished and on-going mega projects from Brazil and abroad will be presented and critical factors involved will be analyzed from the perspective of promoters, contractors, financiers, suppliers, managers, and other stakeholders. Anyone with an interest in such issues should plan to attend.

The MegaProjetos 2008 International Seminar & Exhibition will be conducted on April 3rd and 4th, 2008 (Thursday and Friday) at the Frei Caneca Convention Center, Rua Frei Caneca, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The event promoter is Projectlab. For more information, visit www.megaprojetos2008.com.br. PM Ambassador Michel Thiry to deliver Workshop in Bucharest
on Delivering Corporate Value through the Project-Based Organization

Reported by Florin Gheorghiu in Bucharest

For two days, between 15th and 16th of April, PM Ambassador™ Michel Thiry, a reputed keynote speaker for major international Project Management events and well known seminar leader will hold a workshop in Bucharest focused on strategic roles that PMOs, Portfolio and Program Management can play within the broader framework of organizations’ aim to generate benefits for the business itself and for their customers.

Michel Thiry (pictured) has over 30 years’ professional experience and is founder and Managing Partner of Valense Ltd, a company that provides consultancy services and educational support for the Project-based organizations. He is a PMI Fellow in good standing since 2006 thanks to his many significant contributions, while one year later he gained the same recognition from the Association for Project Management (APM) in UK.

Mr. Thiry is also a prominent author and contributor to numerous book articles such as “Value Management Practice” or Gower’s “Handbook of Project Management”. He is also known for his contributions in publishing PM Network magazine in which he publishes the “Executive Speak” quarterly column.

The Romanian audience will have a great opportunity to meet with a highly ranked professional in the field and more than that, to interactively exchange opinions and concepts with him.

The workshop is structured to last for two days and the organizing sponsor CODECS has highlighted that seats are very limited. It was Mr. Thiry’s desire to confine the audience to a limited number of participants in order for all to better benefit from face-to-face interactions, groups practice and interactive dialogue. These things would not be possible in a larger group of auditors.

The first day is to be dedicated to the Project Management Office (PMO) and Project-Based Organizational issues, as well as their relations with stakeholders. The second day seems to have an extremely challenging agenda glancing through the Project Portfolio Management, aligning the corporate strategies through the projects, and linking business strategy with projects and programs. It is worth mentioning that beside the event Organizer CODECS, PMI Romanian Chapter is nominated as a Partner for the workshop. Thus the PMPs attending the workshop will get up to 14 Professional Development Units (PDUs) for their participation.

For more information on this workshop, visit www.codecs.ro or contact +4021 2525278 or mobile +40722 842524 during working days.

Michel is available for other speaking engagements through the PM Ambassadors™ Speaker Bureau. For additional information, visit http://www.pmforum.org/ambassadors/ambassadors.htm.
