Renowned Risk Management Expert Opens Reported by David Pells and Nelson Soucek in Plano, TX, USA. ![]() Alain Bensoussan, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and former Chair of the European Space Agency, was the keynote speaker opening the 1st UTD Project Management Symposium on 6 August 2007 in Plano, Texas. Dr. Bensousan’s speech focused on “The Challenges of Uncertainty” and included anecdotes, lessons learned and strategic advice based on his many years of experience in the European aerospace industry. According to Dr. Bensoussan, “One of the issues I want to emphasize is the fact that complexity and technology are playing a main role in creating uncertainty. Also, you need to find competencies.” Dr. Bensoussan’s presentation included an overview of (1) new risks; (2) goals of risk management; (3) the role of simulation in risk management; (4) project management and product development processes; (5) the need for flexibility; (6) real options; and (7) organizational aspects of risk management. He also discussed “the upside of risk”, mentioning risks as sources of opportunities for business. “Risk management is a scientific approach that contemplates bad things before they actually happen, and redress the negative effects when they occur,” he stated. “Management is shifting from resource allocation and market performance to the assessment and mitigation of risks.” A copy of Dr. Bensoussan’s presentation is available at http://som.utdallas.edu/project//. ![]() Dr. Bensoussan is the Director of the International Center for Decision and Risk Analysis (ICDRiA) at UTD and has an extensive research background in stochastic control, probability and stochastic processes. Alain Bensoussan is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Paris Dauphine. He graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1962, and obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Paris in 1969. Dr. Bensoussan is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Technology, of the Academia Europae, and the International Academy of Astronautics. He is an IEEE Fellow, and has received the Von Humboldt award as well as the NASA public service medal. Professor Alain Bensoussan has held important positions and responsibilities in the French research system. He was President of the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA) from 1984 to 1996, and President of the French space Agency CNES from 1996 to 2003. He was Chairman of the ESA (European Space Agency) Council from 1999 to 2002. He is Officer of Legion d’Honneur from France and Officer Bundes Verdienst Kreuz from Germany. The 1st UTD Project Management Symposium was held on Monday 6 August 2007, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., at the Plano Convention Center, 2000 East Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, Texas, USA. Karen Tate, PMP, Director-at-Large and member of the Board of Directors of the Project Management Institute (PMI®), delivered the second keynote address at the 1st UTD Project Management Symposium today in Plano, Texas. Karen’s presentation was on the topic of “Project Management as a Strategic Competency”. According to Karen, “Companies are turning to project management to obtain quicker benefits from their projects. The three powerful strategies involved are standards, competencies and maturity”. Representing the PMI board of directors, Karen described some of PMI’s leadership activities and products that directly support the growing strategic importance of project management. According to Karen, “PMI’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge was the 11th best selling business book on Amazon.com in June. The PMBOK Guide has now been published in 10 languages and is widely distributed worldwide”. “As of the end of June”, Karen added, “there were 237,000 persons worldwide with PMP certification. The PMP is in the top 10 most demanded certifications in the market.” Karen also described how world class leaders are embracing project management and PMI in global organizations, including Siemens, Huawei, IBM and NASA. She discussed some of the steps taken by those organizations to raise the level of performance on their projects, including policy direction, risk management and governance strategies. ![]() Karen Tate, MBA, PMP, is Founder and President of The Griffen Tate Group, an Ohio-based project management consulting firm that provides consulting, training, facilitation and course development to both the private and public sectors, small and large organizations. Authors Sign New PM books at 1st UTD Reported by David Pells and Nelson Soucek in Plano, TX, USA Three project management experts presented and signed copies of their project management books at the 1st UTD Project Management Symposium in Plano, Texas, USA on Monday, August 6. ![]() Mark Kozak-Holland, well-known author of the project management books in the Lessons from History series, presented and signed copies of his popular book for IT project management entitled Titanic Lessons for IT Projects. He is also the author of Winston Churchill, the Agile Project Manager; Project Scapegoats, Lessons from the Titanic Project; and Churchill’s Adaptive Enterprise. His newest book, .Project Lessons from The Great Escape. (Stalag Luft III) explores the historical events surrounding the escape project using modern business analysis methods, extracting lessons learned that can be applied to modern business projects. ![]() Thomas F. Shubnell, PhD, presented and signed copies of his new project management book for IT executives entitled The Art of Installation and The Science of Implementation. The new book is a flexible and useful project management guide for both veteran and new project managers. The methodology provides specific steps with explanations and Quality Assurance questions for each phase. Dr. Shubnell presents a new approach for project leaders to accept change, embrace change, advocate change, instigate change, react to change, and even incite change in the project team and the organization. Thomas F. Shubnell Ph.D. is the author of fourteen books and numerous articles, is a frequent speaker at industry conferences, and has over thirty years of experience on IT projects. He has been a Programmer, Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and has managed projects for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP and Ernst & Young LLP. Tom is currently a Principal with The CCI Group, an information services firm that delivers senior level and strategic consulting solutions to healthcare providers, based in Plano, Texas. IPMA Chair Adesh Jain Delivers Closing Keynote Reported by David Pells and Nelson Soucek in Plano, TX, USA ![]() Mr. Adesh Jain, current chair of the board of delegates of the International Project Management Association (IPMA), delivered the closing keynote address at the 1st UTD Project Management Symposium on 6 August 2007 in Plano, Texas. The Symposium was the first in a series of annual project management conferences planned by the Graduate Program in Project Management in the School of Management’s Executive Education Center at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). The 2007 symposium was co-sponsored by the Dallas Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI®) and PMForum, Inc. Mr. Jain’s presentation was entitled, “Project Thinking – The Key to Nurturing Leadership”. His talk was about project leadership as the “backbone of bringing organizational transformation through the undertaking of projects.” According to Adesh, “Projects imply change and change threatens the status quo, as it give the perception of adverse impact on the operational framework of the system. Project thinking is the essence of leading. It is the key gradient for transforming the collective thinking of a group of people and for transforming the ways we manage change.” According to one attendee, “I would like to thank you for having selected Adesh Jain as the ending keynote speaker at the UTD symposium. I would call his speech as a fitting finale to the grand event. I was really amazed by the contrasts he drew b/w project and operational thinking.” ![]() Mr. Adesh Jain, , M. Eng, CPP, MPD, is also Managing Director of the Centre for Excellence in Project Management Ltd. (India), President of PM Guru, Inc. (USA), and Honorary President of Project Management Associates (PMA - India). Mr. Jain is the immediate past president and current Chair of the Council of Delegates of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). He is also a vice president and president-elect of the International Construction Project Management Association. Adesh’s career includes 40 years of project management-oriented work, including projects and positions in US and Indian industry. He has been conferred with 7 major awards in India, including a Fellowship and the 'Gem of India' award, and the Distinguished Contribution Award from PMI® in 1997. Adesh is President of PMA, India since 1993, Vice President of IPMA from 1999 – 2004, and IPMA President during 2005. He is currently IPMA Chair through 2008. One of the most widely recognized leaders in the field of project management, Mr. Jain has traveled extensively, spoken at numerous PM conferences and events, and trained more than 50,000 people worldwide. He has actively supported the rapidly growing PM profession in China since 1999, is honorary chairman of the China Project Management Committee, and gave a keynote presentation in the Great Hall of China in 2001. Mr. Jain received his bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and a masters degree in control systems from Carlton University in Ottawa, Canada. He was named an honorary Fellow of IPMA in October 2006. PMForum Correspondents & Editor Deliver Papers at Two international correspondents along with the managing editor for PMForum were featured speakers at the 1st UTD Project Management Symposium in Plano, Texas, USA on Monday, August 6. Larry Suda, correspondent for PMForum in New York City, and A Matt Piazza, correspondent for PMForum in north Texas, both made presentations and delivered professional papers, along with managing Editor David Pells. ![]() Lawrence Suda, international correspondent for PMForum and the eJournal PM World Today in New York, was a featured speaker in Track 1, Program and Portfolio Management. His presentation was on the subject of “Linking Strategy, Leadership & Organization Culture for Project Success”, was a featured presentation on Monday afternoon. Performance surveys show that projects are still failing at rates higher than 60%. Some companies have ‘tried’ PMOs and portfolio governance and abandoned their efforts after a year or two. Morten Fangel named Global Advisor for PMForum in Denmark Morten Fangel, former president and chair of IPMA and a well known international project management consultant, has agreed to become a Global Advisor for PMForum. One of the most widely recognized figures in the project management profession in Europe, Morten is currently Managing Director and Chief Consultant of Fangel Consultants Ltd., a project management consultancy based in Copenhagen, Denmark. ![]() Morten Fangel is one of the founders of the Danish Project Management Association, of which he today is the Executive Director. Morten is a member of the Danish Project Management Association and four other Nordic Associations, the International Project Management Association (IPMA), the Project Management Institute (PMI ®) and the Association of Certified Management Consultants (CMC). He is former president, past Chair and an Honorary Fellow of IPMA, and an honorary member of the Icelandic Project Management Association. Morten Fangel holds a Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineering, and Ph.D. in industrial research from the Technical University of Denmark and a Diploma in Economics degree from the Copenhagen Business School. After years in consulting Engineering companies, he founded Fangel Consultants Ltd., from where he has more than three decades of experience in management consulting.
