The World of Project Management Revisited! David Pells Presents Update at PMI Dallas Chapter Professional Development Day ![]() David Pells, Managing Editor for PMForum and PM World Today, has presented an update to his "World of Project Management" model at the PMI Dallas Chapter’s Professional Development Day on 28 April 2007. This model was previously presented by Pells in an Editorial for the September 2006 edition of the PM World Today eJournal (www.pmworldtoday.net). According to Pells’ model, the World of PM can be considered to contain the following seven primary elements: I. Project Management research & development Following a discussion of these major elements, which can have overlapping contents and aspects, David described the following “global perspectives” that also come into play during the application of modern project management:
According to Pells, these four perspectives (and sometimes others) must also be included when considering the World of PM. So why is a global perspective on the world of PM needed today? According to David’s presentation, due to the increasing global projectization of business and industry; the globalization of markets and economies; global competition; increasing number of global projects, global project teams, and global PM; global supply chains; and global problems that can only be solved with global projects. According to Wikipedia, the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, a title designated by the U.S. Census as of 2003, encompasses 12 counties within the U.S. state of Texas. The metropolitan area is further divided into two metropolitan divisions: Dallas–Plano–Irving and Fort Worth–Arlington. Residents of this region informally refer to it as the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, or simply The Metroplex (the term was originally invented to refer to Dallas/Fort Worth). North Texas is also a commonly-used term. ![]() According to 2006 estimates, the metropolitan area had a population of 6 million. The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington MSA is the largest metropolitan area in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States. The metroplex also encompasses 9,249 square miles (24,000 km²) land, making it larger in area than the U.S. state of New Jersey. Dallas is also one of 11 U.S. global cities, being ranked a "Gamma World City" by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network. ![]() The cities of Dallas (shown at left) and Fort Worth (in photo below right) are the anchor cities of the Metroplex. Dallas and its suburbs have one of the highest concentrations of corporate headquarters in the United States. As such, one of the largest industries in the Metroplex is conducting business. The Metroplex also contains the largest Information Technology industry base in the state (often referred to as Silicon Prairie), owing to the large number of corporate IT projects and the presence of numerous electronics, computing and telecom firms such as Texas Instruments, Electronic Data Systems, Perot Systems, i2, AT&T, and Verizon in and around Dallas. On the other end of the business spectrum, and on the other side of the Metroplex, the Texas farming and ranching industry is based in Fort Worth, along with the large Lockheed Martin aerospace plant. According to the Dallas Business Journal's 2006 Book of Lists, American Airlines is the largest employer in the Metroplex. Several major defense manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin, Bell Helicopter Textron, and Raytheon, maintain significant operations in the Metroplex. ExxonMobil, the #1 corporation on the Fortune 500 listings, is headquartered in Irving, Texas. The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the largest airport in the state of Texas. The airport is located between Dallas and Fort Worth. American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, has its headquarters next to DFW Airport. American is the largest airline in the world in terms of passengers transported and fleet size. It is also a predominate leader in domestic routes and operations. ![]() Also according to Wikipedia, Texas is a state of the USA located in the country's Southern and Southwestern regions. With an area of 678,051 km² (261,797 square miles) and a population of 23.5 million in 254 counties, the state is second-largest in both area and population. About half the state's population resides in either the Dallas–Fort Worth or Houston metropolitan areas. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. In 1845, it joined the United States as the 28th state. Texas boasts that "Six Flags" have flown over its soil: the Fleur-de-lis of France, and the national flags of Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America. ![]() Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for the ship channel at the Port of Houston—the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world. The state is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies and has the second-largest economy in the United States. In 2005, Texas had a gross state product of $989 billion, the second highest in the U.S. after California, after recently surpassing New York state. Gross state product per capita as of 2005 was $42,975. Texas leads the nation in number of beef, which usually exceed 16 million head. Cotton is the leading crop and the state's second-most-valuable farm product. Texas also leads in national production of grain sorghum, watermelons, cabbages, and spinach. Wheat, corn, and other grains are also important. Texas's growth is often attributed to the availability of jobs, the low cost of housing, the lack of a personal state income tax, low taxation and limited regulation of business, a geographic location in the center of the country, limited government, favorable climate in many areas of the state, and vast, plentiful supplies of oil and natural gas. The known petroleum deposits of Texas are about 8 billion barrels, which makes up approximately one-third of the known U. S. supply. Texas has 4.6 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves. There are currently 33 billionaires residing in Texas today. Dallas has 11 billionaires, the most of any city in Texas. ![]() The United States of America (USA) is is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico and a sea border with Russia and The Bahamas.
