Making a Winemaker’s Dream a Reality

With any large investment, an enormous amount of time and capital go into the planning and design. When building a winery, decisions become complicated with the multiple options to consider. These decisions will depend on the short term and long term goals of the winery. Meticulous attention to project management processes, such as scope planning and definition, become a necessity if the project is to complete on time and within budget.
To get a real-life view of how scope planning and definition are used in the design and construction of a winery, I met with Stephen Lapp, Partner at the architecture firm of Waterleaf (http://www.waterleaf-ai.com/), located in Portland, OR. “Waterleaf focuses on creating smart, sustainable buildings and structures in the Northwest.” Their commitment to environmentally sound values, along with the necessary industry experience, made them a perfect choice to design the Penner-Ash winery. “We approach all projects with a fundamental sensitivity to the environmental impacts of our work both locally and beyond.”
The scope planning and definition process of designing a winery is where decisions are made regarding size, location, production processing, and sustainability.
The size of the facility is the first consideration. Wineries can be elaborate complexes created to improve the tourist experience and allow plenty of room for the entire wine production process…
