Public Transport Rapid Transit Project in Amman

Finally, a dream became true. After years from developing the backbone in August 2008, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) initiated the infrastructure work of the first phase of the public transport Rapid Transit project in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

According to GAM, the cost of delay due to traffic congestion in Amman is estimated to be JD (Jordanian Dinars) 567,000,000 (2006). This is equivalent to about JD 200 per person per year. This does not include other costs of traffic congestion, such as environmental impacts, sprawl, and traffic accidents.

The project consists of two phases. Phase one is the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, and the second phase is the Amman Rail Transit project.

With a total investment of JD 813 million for phase-1, the work has started on the BRT project, which consists of three routes covering 32km total distance. The Amman Rail Transit project is in the feasibility study phase, and it is planned to consist of three lines, covering 41km total distance in different areas than the BRT routes.
