Dealing With Bad Guys A Viewpoint on Tough Stakeholder Management
By Florin Gheorghiu
Project Manager
Bucharest, Romania
As a Project Manager you are called to turn the strategic objectives entrusted by the corporate and management into acceptable deliverable which have to meet the requirements; you exist to make the dreams come true or to seek the solution to a company’s problems. A project manager though does not hold the panacea for giving a solution to a problem.
You have to deal with processes, corporate standards and methodologies, enterprise assets, ground rules and norms, laws and prescriptions; but above all these things you have to deal with people who represent the living essence of all the institutional rules and regulatory documents.
Interaction with various people define our success or failure when in project management environment; either you are on Client, Contractor or Consultant side or you have to face daily many people of various interests to your project and various understanding of overall project needs. Some of them are behind you, supporting you and the project objectives as project team members, or your sponsor or steering committees. Others are external but whose actions influence positively or negatively your job performance in the project execution and the project success itself.
For all these people you meet physically or virtually on your project, you as the project manager must be handed sophisticated techniques for deciphering, decoding and translating their behavior and actions. You must assemble them into some simple rules to guide you easier through a complicated array of situations.
Some of the Stakeholders will always be with you simply because irrespective they like you or they have a keen interest in project completion on time, on scope, on budget.
