Opportunity to Participate in Research on IT Project Failures

PMForum has been contacted by a final year student at Loughborough University, UK who is currently working on a dissertation looking into IT Project Failures.

He is seeking help with the primary research through an online questionnaire. Project Managers are invited to complete the questionnaire with details of their most recent 3 projects since January 2005. Another questionnaire is available for anyone involved in IT projects.

According to the researcher, Matthew Miller, “My research aims to discover links between success and the various attributes of the project including the number of people involved, the complexity and if outsourcing is used. The results will then be analyzed for patterns in the relationships between these attributes which might then lead to a series of recommendations that project managers can use to improve the likelihood of success for their projects.”

Participants who complete the questionnaire will be entitled to an electronic copy of the report and results once the study is completed at the end of May 2008.

The two questionnaires can be accessed as follows:

Another Research Project on IT Project Management
seeks participants

Another student researcher in the UK is conducting some primary research through an online questionnaire designed to highlight the reasons for the success and failure of IT projects, and the most appropriate management methodologies to gain success. The researcher is looking for people who have been involved in IT projects within the last 4 years, both successful and failed. The level of participation can range from being the project manager to the end user of the project; this is to identify if different levels of a hierarchy have different views as to what constitutes a failed or successful project.

According to the student researcher, “It would be interesting to see if different people in different locations in the world implement altered versions of standard methods (such as an adapted PRINCE2) which they deem successful; if this is you then participate in this survey, fill in the questionnaire and email the researcher with some details of the methods undertaken.”

The research, after analysis, will hopefully highlight some useful management methodologies for creating a successful IT project, based on size, amount of stakeholders and money to be spent on the project. Anyone who participates in the research is entitled to a copy of the final report that will be available end of May.

The questionnaire can be accessed at: http://www.my3q.com/home2/197/gemma_smith/64101.phtml

Questions can be addressed to Gemma Smith, Computer Science Department, Loughborough University, at G.L.Smith-04@student.lboro.ac.uk.
