UK Project Management Round Up

Introduction
It has again been a mixed month for the UK project community as Government cuts continue to threaten to overwhelm key parts of the industry. However, some welcome news has come from the Government which announced that the economy expanded more than originally calculated, thanks in part to a strong performance by the construction industry. Elsewhere, there have been other successes in bio-technology and off-shore oil exploration so the past month can be counted successful from a UK project perspective.
Energy Projects
That UK has an energy problem is well know and successive Governments have yet to tackle the issue with any credible programme. Current plans to quick build power stations received a setback last week when reports emerged 37 energy projects covering coal, gas and green schemes have been delayed in the planning process and are awaiting approval by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Together these projects could boost energy output by around 20%.
Concern has been expressed by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) that the recent decision to scrap a number of QUANGOs including the Infrastructure Planning Commission which was designed to fast track major planning decisions, could result in further delays as planning decisions are handed back to Minsters. The CBI concern is about investment rather than simple delays as investors are said to be nervous of committing to the very large scale investments …
