REGIONAL REPORT:
Project Management Update from Kigali

BY Isaac Nyarwaya

Kigali, Rwanda
Introduction
In this issue of Project Management World Today, i would like to share with our Dear readers about some major projects in Rwanda and also the Government of Rwanda (GOR) initiative to start a Single Project/Programme Implementation Unit (SPIU) in public institutions. I hope this idea initiated by the GOR can be benchmarked by other governments across the globe that are struggling with ensuring efficiency and effectiveness of donor projects to their governments.
News from Big Local Projects
Mega projects especially in the construction sector have continued to increase in Rwanda. The most notable one is the construction of a commercial centre that is slated to cost USD 200 million (approximately 117.6 billion Rwandese Francs). This project dubbed “Downtown Ltd” will include hospitality facilities such as hotels, hospitals and restaurants and a commuter terminal of international standards.
I would like to mention a few points about this project:
This project has shown that foreign and local investors’ partnerships are viable in Rwanda. The project is a joint investment of Rwandan and Ugandan investors.
This project has again demonstrated the effort of the GOR in general and President Paul Kagame in particular in creating a conducive environment for doing business in Rwanda. This project will be located in the land that has been occupied by the Kigali Central Prison and it is the effort of the President of Rwanda that enabled handing over this land to the private investors.
