Project Management News By Jaycee Krüger
News from PM Professional Organizations PMSA (Project Management South Africa) News Whilst the relationship between PMSA and PMI SA Chapter is still quite healthy and friendly, the boards of directors of the two organisations decided to bring the arrangement where Chapter membership brought with it automatic PMSA membership to an end by 29 February 2008. Members of the two organisations will in future have to pay membership to both organisations if they want membership of both. The annual golf day of the PMSA Western Cape branch will be held on 31 March, promising to be as usual a good mix between fun and serious golf. PMSA publishes regular news around project management at http://www.pmisa.co.za. PMI (Project Management Institute) - SA Chapter News The Chapter recently hosted their first members meeting for 2008 where the PMI strategy, PMF and the Chapter's high level strategic initiatives were presented. Another presentation is planned once the Chapter's strategy is finalised. The Chapter was approached by PMI EMEA to engage with Mauritius with the aim of forming a branch. In the Chapter's February 2008 newsletter there was a volunteer call for Chapter members, which was faced with an overwhelming response from volunteers and they have already been allocated their respective portfolios. The goal is to build depth in the volunteer foundation for the Chapter to elect future leaders from. The Chapter website is still under construction and will hopefully be operational in March 2008. UK Project Management By Miles Shepherd
Hard times ahead for Project Managers As the economic downturn starts to bite, there is concern over pay rates for project managers. An alarming report indicates that top rates for project managers are coming down – sharply. A recent salary survey by PM3 Consulting reveals that top project management consultants have dropped fees by as much as £300 per day, or an average of 35 per cent. According to Steve Pragnell, chief executive of PM3 Consulting, there are two main reasons for the rate cut. “New management consultants are pouring into the market, which is in turn becoming flooded with first rate people looking for contracts”. He also claimed that “New project managers often under value themselves when new to market, therefore under cutting experienced contractors. However, those we would class as experts – the very best consultants - are having to accept sizeable rate cuts to compete with those with a lower skill set, who can charge less. Secondly, the current economic climate has made it a buyers market.” Read complete report in English
Project Management News from Perú By José Carlos Machicao
As usual, trying to analyze Peruvian reality from the project management point of view, PM Forum shows the main current projects situation. News from the Public Sector During February, the Peruvian public sector was concentrated on the debate about how to implement a Ministry of Environment. The good thing is that a lot of information about the stakeholders and the responsibility of all of them were raised to the press and the public opinion. The bad thing is that little has been said about the scope of the Ministry, the success indicators and how, some years from now, the Minister will respond to the public about what has been done. Still in the public sector, significant achievements have been done about the conclusions of the trial to Alberto Fujimori, former President of Peru back in the 90s. Finally many public entities with different political views agreed to carry on in a very efficient way with the trial. All processes have been respected and carefully followed and the eventual political influence to the trial was avoided. The good thing is that many responsibilities of the crimes during his regime have been clarified. During this week also another trial (this time at the International Court of La Haya) begun to discuss the ocean frontiers between Peru and Chile. This was a very old problem, but currently is being managed with passion from both sides, but with a lot of kindness, respecting, among other things, the enormous amount of markets and business activities between both countries.

Project Management Reported by Alfonso Bucero, PMP
PM Profession Update During February 2008, the Project management profession has moved forward from all Spanish industry sectors, but especially from the Construction and Engineering areas. In fact the most significant news from this month is focused on both sectors. Spanish organizations are becoming more aware of the project management discipline need and they are promoting the profession into the Spanish market. PMI Madrid Spain Chapter members have been increased to 300 professionals and we are still receiving more e-mails and phone calls asking for the member services that Chapter is able to provide. Business schools like IL3 (Institute for Long Life Learning) from Barcelona, La Salle Business School from Barcelona, and the School of Industrial Engineering from Zaragoza University are promoting the profession between their students. The Global Project & Process Management Association (GPPMA) registration papers have been submitted to the authorities and everything is set to finalize the registration in March of this year. Contract Management: Concepts, Trends, Approaches, and Tools Although GPPMA has not been fully registered yesterday, it has conducted its third monthly event on 25 February 2008. The event’s main sponsor and host was Dubai Knowledge Village (www.kv.ae) and the co-sponsor was SUKAD FZ-LLC (www.sukad.com). The speaker was the CEO of SUKAD Mr. Mounir Ajam (who is also the PM Forum Correspondent in the UAE). The event included about 100 professionals from various industries and nationalities and it was quite interactive. The room was at capacity and actually chairs had to be added to accommodate the flow of professionals. This attendance is an indication of the high level interest in the topic and professional development in the region especially that these types of events have been missing from the UAE. Dubai Knowledge Village (www.kv.ae), the main supporter for GPPMA and where the association is being registered, is the only free zone in the world dedicated to education and professional development and it is part of TECOM Investments.
