EDITOR'S PERSPECTIVE

Editor's Perspective on The May 2009 Edition of PM World Today

David Pells

By David L. Pells
Managing Editor

Welcome to the May 2009 edition of PM World Today.  Since 1998, PM World Today has been a leading online source of educational and informative articles and stories about project management.  As the global reach of this online publication grows, we continue to seek new authors who want to share knowledge or advance their careers.  If you have project management knowledge (or a story) to share, please send an article for publication. We are especially interested in those that contribute to solving global problems.

Each month the Editor’s Perspective on the Current Edition provides a short overview of the contents of the current edition of PM World Today.  This month’s edition again contains articles, news and stories from around the world of project management (PM), including several in Spanish.  PM World Today is an educational resource for PM professionals.  It is also a service for PM experts, leaders and professionals who want to share knowledge, get published or gain more visibility in the PM world.

This month’s Editorial is entitled “Frontiers in Project Management – Healthcare, Medicine and Medical Treatment: Part 1 – PM for Hospitals and Medical Centers!”  Healthcare, medicines and medical treatment are industries that are growing rapidly, due to demographic changes, increased use of technologies, and other factors.  Like many other industries, they are also becoming more project-oriented.  That is, every drugs, healthcare and medical organization in the world now has programs and projects to manage, representing trillions of dollars of investment each year, and a dramatically growing need for program and project management.

In addition, medical emergencies can also require rapid responses, programs and projects, and the need for critical PM-related support services.  This month as we go to press, the world is facing a Flu Pandemic, with the World Health Organization (WHO) raising the pandemic level this week to 5 for the H1N1 Flu Virus (also known as the Swine Flu) that began in Mexico two weeks ago, has now killed 180 people and spread across Mexico, and has been identified in 10 US states and a dozen other countries.
