Letter to Editor

On the August PMWT Editorial on Arrogance in Project Management

6 August 2010

Dear Mr. Pells:

I found your editorial on the Dangers of Arrogance in Project Management to be a refreshing, rewarding and responsible response to a growing issue in the project management profession and in industry leadership today.

I teach graduate students in project and program management. Too many times I’ve seen managers coming into my courses with a sense of arrogance regarding the tools, techniques and, processes of the project management methodology. My perception is that many times they feel they got to where they are without proven methods for managing projects and do not see the need for learning them, if only to get through my classes. This is a dangerous mindset that can adversely affect organizations once arrogance is perpetuated at the work site.

Educators try to draw this to students’ attention (I intend to use your editorial as a discussion) but, educators cannot nip arrogance by themselves. We need the support of the management chain of command to help or we will continue to suffer from the pitfalls of pride in our professions.

Sincerely,

Professor M. Jeffery Tyler, PMP
