Letter to the Editor:
On the Subject of PM World Today support of PM Research Projects

May 04, 2009

Hello David

The PM World Today looks great these days – congratulations on a wonderful publication!

I have published an article with you several years ago and continue to see results of research among your publications.

I am wondering if you have explicit policies or processes around the support of research.

My research team (from Simon Fraser University and Oxford) has been publishing academic articles and reaching out to practitioners for several years now (articles for practitioners are on www.PMPerspectives.org). Our next work will need some help from practice leaders like PM World Today.

We are getting ready to do a large survey this fall, trying to understand more about how PM practices lay the foundation for business value in IT-enabled business projects.

We have moved beyond the time/budget/scope outcomes and want to empirically test our ideas about creating value.

To do this, we will need access to a large sample of fairly senior PMs, the ones who work on transformational projects. PM World Today appeals to this kind of project manager, and the research should be very relevant to them. Right now, we are piloting the survey to test the basic concepts in it.

I am wondering if you have a place in your publication where we could invite PMs to complete our survey? We would only need a couple of sentences and a link but it should be prominent enough that PMs can find it. In return for this sponsorship of our research, we would be pleased to publish an early article with you and do a webinar for your readers about the results.

Thank you very much for considering this request.

Cheers!

Editor’s response::  We are happy to support project management research activities.  We are also looking for articles and news about PM research.  We can publish a news article about the research, with links to appropriate websites for participation or more information.  If you or your research group is seeking such visibility, please contact editor@pmforum.org.
