Michigan State University to Establish a Branch Campus in Dubai

Reported by Mounir Ajam in Dubai, UAE

During a recent event we were told that a major US university is coming to town and here it was just announced (29 September 2007) that Michigan State University (MSU) is establishing a branch in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC).

This initiative is part of Dubai and the UAE to drive higher education in the Region to world class standards. The partnership will offer various subjects and fields at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In a recent discussion with the Executive Director of Dubai Knowledge Village and DIAC and a discussion with a representative of MSU, we understand that Project Management would be one of the fields offered at the MSU Dubai branch.

Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), the world's only free zone dedicated to international higher education, located in Dubai Academic City, serves as a regional base for premier international higher education institutions.

Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director, Dubai Knowledge Village and DIAC, said: 'Dubai is already experiencing an exponential growth in the higher education sector. Dubai International Academic City has been created in response to the tremendous growth that Dubai Knowledge Village has witnessed over the past four years, attracting educational institutions from around the world. "Dubai International Academic City has been founded as part of a long-term economic strategy to develop the region's talent pool. It underscores the Dubai Strategic Plan announced by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to address the need for building a knowledge based economy.' Spread across an area of 25 million sq. ft., DIAC is the first dedicated tertiary cluster development. Out of this, eight million sq. ft. will be dedicated to the international higher education zone, while three million sq. ft will be allocated for research and development centres.

A pioneering project of the Dubai Educational Council yesterday, Dubai Academic City is part of an ongoing Dubai government initiative to invest in the development of human capital through quality international higher education and training. The phase one of the project, built on a 130 million square foot campus between Dubai and Al Ain, will accommodate over 25 universities being moved to the city from the Knowledge Village, which will from now on will host only training institutions. When completed in 2012, Dubai Academic City will provide the opportunity for more than 150,000 students to receive education in some of the best local, regional and global institutions that will be housed within its campus. Nearly 20 international institutes of higher learning from Australia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Belgium, UK and Ireland have already set up base at DIAC, catering to over 8,500 students.

First Female Graduate from British University in Dubai with a Masters Degree in Project Management is UAE National

Reported by Mounir Ajam in Dubai

The British University in Dubai (BUiD) has announced that the first female graduate to be awarded a Master of Science degree in Project Management (MSc PM) is a UAE National. The award represents a significant vindication of the university’s strategy of delivering British-style masters degrees to meet the vocational and developmental needs of the United Arab Emirates. It also demonstrates the success and further potential for higher education to help develop the workforce in the Gulf region.

An academic award to Hind Yousef Al Youha represents a milestone for both BUiD and a startling individual career. Schooled in Dubai, Ms. Al Youha has consistently combined professional responsibilities with higher education. Taken together, the partnership between student and institution shows the key role that both are hoping to play in the local economy.

“Hind’s triumph shows what The British University in Dubai is capable of achieving. Not only are our Masters Degrees ideal for working professionals, but we are providing an environment where Emirati graduate students can go on to help build a knowledge economy in the UAE,” said Dr. Kasim Randeree, Programme Director and Lecturer in the Faculty of Business. “Hind’s graduation project was of such quality as to set a benchmark for this field,” he added.

Dr Randeree’s own research suggests that highly educated female Emiratis provide a sound basis from which to meet government targets on Emiratising the workforce. His most recent dissertation student demonstrates the ability and pedagogic depth present in BUiD to make this goal a reality.

“I would like to thank my parents, my professors and especially my dissertation supervisor, DrKasim Randeree” added Hind Yousef Al Youha. “The quality of teaching has helped me to prepare to make a further lasting contribution to the development of my country and its economy.” Following her Masters Degree award, Hind was offered an adjunct lectureship teaching Project Management courses at the Dubai Women's' College.

A version of Ms. Al Youha’s research thesis will be made public in 2008, following several international invitations to present her findings to a wider audience. Under research topic of "Evaluation of Strategic Performance Management in Government Organizations", evaluaing performance management in terms of adequate systems and alignment to the organisation's corporate strategic plan.

No stranger to high quality accomplishments, Hind Al Youha achieved honours at high school before working her way up from trainee to Corporate Performance Manager in Dubai’s Department of Civil Aviation. In turn, she developed a work-study programme, where full-time employment coincided with evening study towards a Bachelor of Business Management degree, graduating with honours on the basis of her work, which was evaluated as excellent.

Hind added to her achievements by studying for the BUiD MSc degree while in full-time employment. Remarkably, she completed the masters in one year, rather than the standard two years in duration.
