“The Project Management Tool Kit – 100 Tips and Techniques for Getting the Job Done Right” offers PMI- and PMBOK-based information on generally accepted PM activities, with good references to PMBOK location and content. The author, Tom Kendrick, has a similar background to mine: a PMP, Fortune 500 manager/exec, and apparently a fair bit of experience as an independent consultant.

The advertising for the book promises to deliver step-by-step “guidance for professionals at all levels on essential topics,” like collecting requirements, inheriting projects, selecting and implementing project metrics, etc. The means for delivering these are advertised as “checklists and tools for quick implementation” which was what attracted me to get the book.

Expecting the Tool Kit to be organized by project phase so that users can find tools and checklists based on where they are in a project’s progress, I was surprised to see the 100 activities listed in alphabetical order across 250 pages, followed by an index. The introduction to the book is titled: “How to Use this Book (Read This First)” which explains the Tool Kit is actually a reference book, addressing my expectation of ordering processes chronologically with a “knowledge area list” that gathers “related practices and concepts in the sequence in which people typically use them” - exactly what I had hoped for in terms of structure and ordering…
