In this review, I kick the tires on this manual from personal perspectives with emphasis on business, science, Project Management Institute standards, and other opinions that have been of interest while reading Wagner & Barkley’s latest work.

On the cover of this hefty, 450-page tome, Global Project Management offers a “practical resource” with “proven strategies for directing the design, development, delivery, and monitoring of major, long-term business or agency programs”.  Marketing for the book directs us in imperative form to “Discover how to:

 - Review organizational and global settings for program management,
- Adhere to the new Project Management Institute Standard for Program Management,
- Develop strategies, programs, and candidate projects into a strategic portfolio,
- Align strategies and programs to ensure success, profitability, and program benefits
- Assess, monitor, and mitigate risk on a program scale
- Hone global program management leadership competencies
- Find and secure partners to provide program support
- Apply program management concepts to federal sector reforms.

Opening appropriately with an overview of program management and global programs this book, “Global Program Management” (hereafter: “GPM”) discusses the following topics in the main section of the book, and in the following order: Project Management Institute’s Program Management standard, portfolios, strategies, managers themselves, and new program development.  This main section is followed by a risk management checklist, info on Microsoft apps, and “Global Project Management in a Program Management World” rounding out 3 appendices.
