Taylor Scoops Top APM Awards

Reported by Miles Shepherd in the UK

The Association for Project Management (APM) made two of its most prestigious awards to Tom Taylor at their Awards Dinner in London this week. Taylor, already the first and so far the only recipient of the President's Medal, has been awarded the prestigious Sir Monty Finniston Award as well as being elected as an Honorary Fellow of APM

The Sir Monty Finniston Award, the most prestigious of the APM Project Management Awards, is presented to an individual for lifetime achievement and recognises their achievements and their contribution to the profession, either as a single effort or as a sustained effort over a long period.

Tom is currently one of APM's five vice presidents and is the immediate past chairman. In a long and varied membership of APM he has been the chairman of the London branch. There he introduced many innovative aspects of its operation including the innovative Inspire group of young PMs. He was responsible for the branch handbook which became an integral part of APM's devolved structure, enabling branches to share effective working practices and generally improve operational efficiency. As chairman (2004 - 2006), he implemented the revised governance arrangements and the implementation of the new board structure. He has been a major influence on APM's development over the past 5 years.

In his address on the award of the Sir Monty Finniston Award for 2009, APM Chairman Mike Nichols reminded the 300 plus guests that Tom had contributed to the profession for the last 30 plus years, predominantly in the front-line working on construction projects. He went on to say that 'Tom has
made huge strides in shaping APM, the association that supports UK project management professionals. He drove forward APM's new identity, governance structure and the formation of the new Board of Trustees. He continues to make a key contribution to raising the profile of both APM and the profession and was the catalyst for APM's recent move to its new home in Princes Risborough. Currently one of our Vice Presidents, he continues to contribute to APM's international outlook by furthering our interests at international events. He has shown both commitment and clearly gets huge enjoyment from what he does.'

In addition to his lifetime achievement award, Taylor has also elected an Honorary Fellow of APM, a unique double.

The Association for Project Management (APM) is the UK's national body for professional project management. With over 17,500 individual and 500 corporate members throughout the UK and abroad, APM is one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. The organisation develops and promotes project management across all sectors of industry and beyond. APM's mission is: "To develop and promote the professional disciplines of project and programme management for the public benefit." APM is the UK member of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). With headquarters in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, APM has twelve regional branches throughout the UK and one in Hong Kong. More information can be found at www.apm.org.uk.
