Project Management Update from Jordan

The Disi Project

The Disi project is one of the major and most important undergoing projects in Jordan. Simply, the project will pump and supply water from the Disi aquifer in the southern desert of Jordan to the capital Amman.

After decades of starting and stalling, the Disi water conveyance project is finally being implemented. The Disi aquifer is shared between Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The water is known to be of excellent quality, and has been used until now by both countries for agricultural purposes only.

It is known that Jordan is one of the top 10 water-poor countries in the world.This urged the Government of Jordan to prioritize The Disi Project among other projects in the country. In 2008, the government opened the doors to receive bids from companies and consortiums in order to execute this project based on Build Operate Transfer “BOT” basis. The Turkish company GAMA has won the bid, and signed the contract with the Government in June 2009.
 
Studies show that the Disi aquifer contains approximately 6 billion cubic meters of excellent quality water. The government is planning to supply Amman by 100 million cubic meters every year. This means…
